Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is going back to the streets: Starz announced that it has greenlit Power, an hour-long drama executive produced by the rapper and actor. The series follows James “Ghost” St. Patrick, an ambitious New York club owner who leads a double life as a drug kingpin. Courtney Kemp Agboh, previously a writer-producer on The Good Wife, joins as showrunner.

“Courtney has crafted an incredible modern story from an idea we developed with 50 and Randall Emmett. She’s without hesitation one of the best writers and storytellers that I’ve had the privilege to work with,” said executive producer Mark Canton in a statement.

Jackson’s involvement lends a “unique and specific vision” to the series, as well as “an authenticity” that is rarely seen, execs said in a statement. 50 Cent called the show “a passion project,” adding that he “couldn’t be more thrilled to have found a home with Starz. I look forward to working with this incredibly talented team on making Power a hit show.”

No word on casting yet (though the part of Ghost sounds tailored to its producer, no?). Filming on the eight-episode season is set to begin in late 2013.

Power joins the channel’s small-but-growing list of original programming, including Magic CityDa Vinci’s Demons, and The White Queen.
