Cher: If 'The Voice' was around when I was starting out, I wouldn't have played roller rinks

When you’ve been in the business as long as Cher has, you have loads of perspective from more than 40 years of career ups and downs. On Tuesday night’s episode of The Voice, after her first live performance in a decade, Cher took the time to talk to EW from her lofty position as the Goddess of Pop.

She first looked at me and wondered aloud why they were letting 3-year-olds interview her, but she seemed enthusiastic about the new wave of musical TV. Coming from a TV background, thanks to her ’70s variety show with then-husband Sonny Bono, Cher said she would have loved to have had the opportunities afforded by shows like The Voice.

“Going on shows like this, this is an amazing thing. … When I first started, we played bowling alleys and roller rinks,” she recalled. “We didn’t get to go on anything. We got to go on stuff when we were famous, but this is amazing, when you have actual people who have been in the business, been successful and want to help you. You can bypass a lot of trashy stuff.”

If  given the opportunity she would’ve been first in line to audition for a singing competition show. “Oh gosh, yeah, are you kidding? I would’ve been like, ‘Let me in!’”

Cher said the best aspect of these shows is the exposure for unknown artists. Her Sonny & Cher show was the opposite.

“Sonny and I were already famous — we became famous in ’65 and we didn’t have the show until ’72, and we also had a big valley there between the two,” she said. “That was more like, it was comedy and it was singing and we … didn’t have people that weren’t famous. People watched our show to see people who were famous doing sketches and … I don’t know that a show like that would actually work anymore.”

So would she like to try her hand at judging or coaching one of these shows? Well, she things mentoring young singers “would be fun.” I’m sure The Voice would make room for Cher anytime she wanted to grace the stage, the coaches chairs or the mentor sessions.
