Whoopi Goldberg will star as a mother of four determined to make amends in the film adaptation of Terry McMillan’s novel A Day Late and a Dollar Short, Lifetime announced Friday.

The actress, who is the recipient of an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, Grammy, and a Tony Award, will play the lead and executive produce the TV movie adaptation of the bestselling novel by the author of Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Goldberg’s no stranger to McMillan’s work — she starred opposite Angela Bassett in the 1998 big-screen adaptation of How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

The story follows Viola Price (Goldberg), who learns she is inches from death. Resolved to sort out all of her family’s issues before she passes on, she sets out to correct the mistakes of each of her four children – which include teen pregnancy, prescription drug addiction, and jail time. She also has to rescue her estranged husband from a younger woman.

Production starts this summer, and the movie will premiere on Lifetime in 2014.
