'Doctor Who': Peter Capaldi to replace Matt Smith

Welcome your new Time Lord!

BBC announced today that Peter Capaldi, best known for his role as foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker on BBC comedy series The Thick of It, has been cast as the 12th Doctor. He was the favorite leading up to the announcement, made today on a live program.

He replaces Matt Smith, who announced two months ago that he intended to leave the series. Smith is expected to make his final appearance on Doctor Who in this year’s Christmas special.

Last week, Smith spoke about his time on the 50-year-old show to press during the Television Critics Association press tour. “I feel very proud to be a part of such a wonderful legacy,” he said. “The thing about [the Doctor] is he always looks forward. The show will get bigger and better and carry on without me”

Earlier this month, Smith, Who companion Jenna Coleman, David Bradley, and Mark Gatiss stopped by EW’s studio at Comic-Con. That interview is below:
