Luther creator Neil Cross takes immense pleasure in terrifying people, if he can. And he did with last night’s premiere. Know you are not alone if you slept on your couch because you felt safer there than in your bed or jumped at noises emanating from your attic. Credit for that man’s head going through the floor goes to director Sam Miller. “He phoned me up from set and said, ‘I’ve got this great idea! Why don’t we…’ and I just went, ‘Ohmygod, yeah! Let’s do that! Let’s do that!'” Cross tells EW. Tonight’s hour is slightly less disturbing as DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) closes in on that killer while he himself continues to feel the pressure from DS Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird) and “Grand Inquisitor” George Stark (David O’Hara), who are determined to use Luther’s partner, DS Justin Ripley (Warren Brown), to nail him as a dirty copper. In our exclusive sneak peek below, Luther and Erin have a little chat — and Elba is compelling as ever. “What I loved about that scene is the tension between the kind of massive integrity of his words and the slight deceptiveness of his actions,” Cross says. “Because in that scene, he’s actually planting a tracking device on Erin so that he can find her later in the episode.” And without spoiling it, that scene will yield another emotion entirely.
Tonight’s episode of Luther airs at a special time, 9 p.m. ET, on BBC America.
