Just call him Carson Twice-Daly.
The host of NBC’s Last Call — which airs weeknights at 1:35 a.m. Eastern — just snagged himself a morning job. Today has announced that on Sept. 16, Daly will join the show permanently as “the host of our brand new Orange Room,” a sort of digital/social media lounge that “connects the show and the audience like never before.”
In other words: He is to Today as Christina Milian is (was?) to The Voice.
“When I got the call about being permanently on Today and launching the Orange Room, it was like a dream come true,” Daly told the morning show’s website. (In recent years, he’s been a frequent guest and guest host on NBC’s early-airing juggernaut.) “You know that scene in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, where Charlie peels back the wrapper and finds the golden ticket? I felt like I got the golden ticket.”
NBC’s release indicates that Daly will continue to host and produce The Voice, which begins its fifth season Sept. 23. Though he will also continue to produce Last Call, his new wakeup time means that the show must find a new host; “plans for a transition will be announced at a later date,” according to NBC.
Tune in next week for Daly’s big debut — and check below for a montage of his greatest Today moments so far. Hint: Most of them involve taking shots with Hoda Kotb.
