Next week sees the debut of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., ABC’s small-screen spin-off of the ludicrously successful linked-universe superhero mega-franchise. S.H.I.E.L.D. could just be the tip of the iceberg.
EW has confirmed the news, originally reported by Deadline, that Marvel is beginning to plan another TV show — about Agent Carter, the superspy love interest played by Hayley Atwell in the first Captain America movie. Atwell already reprised her character in a short Agent Carter film, which played at Comic-Con and will be released with the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray, and she’ll apparently have some role in the next Captain America film — presumably in flashback, since Cap 2 takes place about 70 years after Cap 1.
A source tells EW that an Agent Carter spin-off is definitely under consideration — although since Marvel is Marvel, it could be “under consideration” in the same sense that a Power Man and Iron Fist movie is under consideration. (Which should star Terry Crews and Stephen Amell, clearly.) Theoretically, an Agent Carter series would take place in the post-war era, offering Marvel the opportunity to bring in various bits of comic book arcana (come on, Monster Hunters!) while avoiding any appearances by superheroes with expensive powers.
The point is, we’re moving one step closer to the utopian future when ABC will be a network composed entirely of Marvel spinoffs, Once Upon a Time miniseries, Bachelor extensions, and Shonda Rhimes.
