Everyone who’s been tuning into NBC’s The Blacklist has a theory about exactly how sly criminal Ray Reddington (James Spader) and profiler Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) are connected. And as every week passes, the clues continue to add up. The most recent one? The photo above from the episode airing Oct. 28, that shows Ray and Liz having yet another rather sweet moment.
When asked of Liz and Ray’s possible connections — and the fatherly way with which Ray deals with Liz — executive producer Jon Bokenkamp was coy on details but said much of the dynamic is a function of casting. “You know Spader’s the guy who’s done this a long time and he’s a consummate pro. Megan is somebody who’s new. Even in the way that this show is cast is indicative in their relationships,” he says.
Of the show’s numerous mysterious elements — like the characters’ connection and Liz’s husband’s secret life — he adds, ”I just want people to be surprised.” “Although I love the procedural element and the case-of-the-week side of the show, I do think that it’s ultimately just those characters and who they are and how they’re connected [that] you remember in hindsight,” he says. “That’s the juicy stuff. We’ve got to be careful not to go through too quickly because they’re big stories, and larger questions and they’re a little more complex. Some things we can’t just answer in one episode, so we’re going to take our time with some of those.”
