Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (ABC)
Why it might have worked: Once Upon is one of ABC’s biggest success stories in recent years and Alice in Wonderland is a classic tale. Producers promised an uncluttered limited-series approach.
Why it so didn’t: Some characters fell flat. But an oft-referenced issue unique to Wonderland is the show’s special effects. If you’re doing Alice in Wonderland, viewers want to feel transported to a magical place — not transported to a green-screen studio. It’s like ABC thought they could get away with the same effects used on veteran hit Once Upon. It doesn’t work like that. You need to re-earn an audience by topping the current standards in every respect. The actors don’t even look like they’re actually standing in front of that shrub in the photo above — and that’s just a shrub, nothing magical, just an ordinary real-life thing!
