The 47th Annual Country Music Association Awards delivered its most popular show in four years Wednesday night.

ABC’s telecast from Nashville had 16.6 million viewers and a 4.7 rating among adults 18-49, up 24 percent from last year. This is also the show’s second most-watched telecast in eight years. The CMAs also won the country music award popularity contest with CBS’ Academy of Country Music Awards this year, beating the April telecast in both key measures.

During the show, singer George Strait took home the award for entertainer of the year, with Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert winning best male and female vocalist, respectively (winners list). Here’s EW’s best and worst of the broadcast.

The CMAs crushed the first live show of the season of Fox’s The X Factor, which had only 4.5 million viewers and a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49. Moreover, due to an on-screen gaffe, the voting results from Wednesday’s show will be thrown out, and contestants will have to sing again on tonight’s show with fans re-voting. “It’s happened once before,” tweeted producer-judge Simon Cowell. “It’s live TV. You have to deal with it, tough for the contestants though. But you have to dig deep and deliver.”

Also Wednesday night: Survivor was up 9 percent, while the rest of CBS’ lineup was steady. NBC’s Revolution was steady, with Law & Order: SVU up a bit. The CW’s Arrow was up, while The Tomorrow People was unchanged.
