Did you hear the one about the stand-up comedy competition that returned to NBC after a four-year hiatus?
We actually don’t have a punchline for that question. Because we’re not comics. But the contestants are on Last Comic Standing are comics. And NBC is bringing back the show after taking an extended break from the format.
The eighth season of Last Comic Standing, which first launched in 2003, will air next summer on NBC. The broadcaster actually cancelled the series in 2004 after three cycles, but then brought it back in 2006. After the seventh season in 2010, the show went off the air again, but was never officially axed.
There’s no host yet for the revived version (previous hosts included Jay Mohr, Anthony Clark and Bill Bellamy). Wanda Sykes is coming on board to executive produce along with returning executive producer Page Hurwitz. Last Comic Standing has helped introduce several now-famous comic talents, like Doug Benson, Ralphie May and Amy Schumer.
