'Almost Human' scores The Crystal Method as series composer -- EXCLUSIVE

In a very rare move for a TV series, Fox’s Almost Human is teaming with a popular music act to serve as the show’s composer.

Las Vegas-based electronic duo The Crystal Method has been contracted to score at least the first season of the sci-fi drama, starting with Sunday’s premiere. “We were absolutely thrilled to be asked to score Almost Human,” Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland said in a statement. “The show is really incredible! Although scoring weekly television is a tremendous challenge we feel that this has been the perfect series for us to pick up. Working with [showrunner Joel Wyman] and everyone at Bad Robot has been an amazing experience and we really look forward to scoring each and every episode.” This isn’t The Crystal Method’s first Fox gig — they also did the theme song for Bones.

While popular artists are often hired to write a TV show’s main theme (like the Barenaked Ladies doing The Big Bang Theory theme), or to score feature films (like Daft Punk’s rather great Tron: Legacy score), a well-known band serving as a TV show’s episode-by-episode composer is highly unusual (we’re struggling to think of a previous compatible example). The Crystal Method’s deal is for the show’s first season as TV composer deals are typically renewed on a year-by-year basis.

While The Crystal Method will score the show, the Almost Human opening song will actually not be written by the band. You’ll  recognize the composer’s name, however: The tune is from the show’s famed executive producer, J.J. Abrams. (New Q&A with Abrams on Almost Human and other subjects). Abrams also did the opening theme for another one of his Fox shows, Fringe.

None of this Almost Human music has been made even semi-public yet. The version of the show’s pilot viewed by TV critics and the show’s trailers all featured temp scores. Fox premieres Almost Human (trailer) on Sunday at 8 p.m., then the show will shift into its regular time slot starting Monday at 8 p.m. The first episode skips the opening theme, so Abrams’ contribution won’t make its debut until Monday’s hour.

The Crystal Method is also readying a new self-titled album, which will be released in January (more on that here).
