Beauty and the Beast will have a new recurring face in the new year…and it’s Tom Everett Scott!

EW has learned exclusively that Scott has landed a recurring role on the CW series, playing a character named Sam, a brilliant archaeologist with a short fuse who is described as someone “who can be charming on one hand and maniac on the other.”

Sam’s backstory will be revealed in his first appearance, set for episode 12 and airing in 2014, and continue to unravel as he crosses paths with Kat, Vincent and Co. But what we can share is that he’s been in isolation for many years — something that may not be of his own doing — and his experience has changed him. Hmm…

Scott last appeared on television in TNT’s Southland, which concluded this year.

Beauty and the Beast airs Mondays on the CW.
