Viewers might assume that Modern Family being nominated for Best Comedy at the Golden Globes would be a foregone conclusion — but Modern Family co-creator/executive producer Chris Lloyd didn’t see it that way.

“There was a little bit of trepidation about it because we’ve been lucky enough to be nominated in years’ past and I think there’s probably new reasons not to nominate us with each passing year,” Lloyd explained to EW this afternoon. “There’s the, ‘Oh, not those guys again’ syndrome, so we were really tickled to still be in the mix. … That’s the Golden Globes ethic I think, to kind of spread the love and kind of be the ones to crown the new show or the new young star. That’s part of what makes their award a fun one, that they’re a bit unpredictable, but for us, particularly, it makes it very gratifying that was still get to be in there because we’re anything but the new kid in town.”

While Lloyd is thrilled about the show’s recognition, he’s particularly excited for Sofía Vergara, who was the only cast member to receive an individual acting nod this year. “Everyone is happy for Sofía [on set today], because she gets a lot of attention for being beautiful and now [is] this international conglomerate all unto herself. I don’t think she gets as much credit as she might for being a really funny comedic actress. And she proves it to us every week. For example, two days ago we shot a scene where she basically gets caught in a tornado and her hair is flying everywhere, her makeup is smudged, she’s holding her dress back. It’s really very undignified, and she made it incredibly funny. This girl isn’t just beautiful; she’s a clown, and she’s really good at this stuff and I was pleased to see her acknowledged for that.”

Besides Gloria in a tornado, Lloyd teased that the rest of the fifth season of the comedy will feature episodes with the whole gang in Las Vegas, Mitch and Cam’s bachelor parties, and maybe even a trip down the aisle by season finale time. “We haven’t really planned the last six episodes of the year yet, but I think there’s a strong possibility [the wedding] will happen this year.”
