FX orders Denis Leary comedy pilot, 'Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll'

Denis Leary could be coming back to FX, this time in a half-hour comedy which he is writing and producing.

The network announced its reunion with the star today for a pilot titled Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, which was written by and stars the former Rescue Me star.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll centers on a character named Johnny Rock (Leary), a middle-aged rock star who desperately wanted to be rich and famous but has found himself “0 for 2.” The problem? On the verge of success in the early ’90s with a band called The Heathens, Johnny’s problems with drugs and alcohol (and his philandering with his bandmate’s wife) got in the way. The show picks up 25 years later when Johnny is trying to get the band back together. As a description for the show released by the network puts it, “25 years later, the sex might be harder to find, the drugs might be Luvox and Crestor and Cialis – but rock ‘n roll will never die. It just has a bigger prostate.”

The pilot, scheduled to shoot in spring, will be produced by FX Productions and Fox Television Studios and filmed on location in New York City. The show will also feature original music and occasional guest appearances by actual rock stars.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is a terrific script and concept with Denis Leary’s signature brand of comedy,” said Eric Schrier, co-president of original programming, in a statement. “Denis is a tremendous talent who played a major role in the growth of our network with Rescue Me, which was one of the most groundbreaking series of the last decade. We’re thrilled to have him back home at FX.”

Adds Leary: “I am very excited to be returning to FX where working with [co-president] Nick [Grad], Eric and John Landgraf has been one of the best creative experiences of my life.  Plus I hear they have much better swag now.”
