The Gecko Brothers are back — stealing money, taking prisoners and fighting vampires in the new TV series version of cult-favorite From Dusk Til Dawn. Above we have a sample of the show’s lusty key art and below is the first trailer for the show, which stars D.J. Cotrona as Seth and Zane Holtz as Richie, two brothers on the run from the law who face off against the the undead.
From Dusk til Dawn: The Series greatly expands upon the original story and vampire mythology launched by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino in their original 1996 film (which spawned two sequels). “The film was the short story, this series is the novel,” Rodriguez told critics at the TCA press tour in Pasadena on Sunday. “We had a blast making this a rich experience that feels like it can go on and on for seasons.” The series also has an impressive co-star lineup that includes Don Johnson, Wilmer Valderrama and Robert Patrick. Make-up effects are being overseen by The Walking Dead‘s Greg Nicotero.
“What channel?” you ask? A new one: Rodriguez’s promising cable channel El Rey, an English-language network targeting Latino viewers, which launched last month (specifically, the channel targets men 18-49, including millennials and America’s growing Latino community. It’s currently available on several systems, including Comcast, DirecTV and Time Warner Cable. First, here’s an exclusive FDTD trailer. From Dusk Til Dawn premieres March 11 on El Rey.
El Rey also announced its teaming with reality mega-producer Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Bible) to bring the Lucha Libre AAA wrestling league to the United States. The idea is to create a weekly hour-long series that brings the hugely popular Mexican sport-tainment stateside. The premise: Five Lucha Libre stars discover there’s a secret plot in the U.S. that’s going to destroy the very foundations of the league, so travel north to recruit new North American stars to foil the plot. “Starting this business with a new television series on a cutting-edge network like El Rey is very exciting,” Burnett said. “And it doesn’t end there. Wrestling is a billion-dollar business in the U.S., and with partners like Robert Rodriguez, Lucha Libre AAA and the rest of our great team, our new lucha libre league will make that market even bigger.”
The presentation also gave some details about its scripted series Matador, from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Sleepy Hollow). The 13-episode, hour-long drama follows a popular playboy soccer star who’s secretly a CIA operative. The series will premiere this summer.
Here’s a full-size look at that FDTD art (featuring Eiza Gonzalez as the vamp temptress Santanico Pandemonium).
