CBS orders pilot about a female Secretary of State -- surely based on nobody in particular

CBS has ordered a drama pilot about “the personal and professional life of a maverick female Secretary of State as she drives international diplomacy, wrangles office politics and balances a complex family life.”

So naturally one immediately thinks of … Madeleine Albright, right?

The order comes after NBC planned a Hillary Clinton miniseries and CNN ordered a Hillary Clinton documentary series and both projects died in development after facing strong protest from the Republican National Committee, which vowed a boycott of the networks should they launch projects that potentially glamorize the presumed 2016 Democratic nominee.

CBS’ pilot is titled Madam Secretary and is from writer Barbara Hall (Judging Amy) with executive producers Morgan Freeman (yes, that one), Lori McCreary and Tracy Mercer.

In fairness, when it comes to female Secretaries, there has been Clinton, and Albright and Condoleezza Rice, and the producers probably really will try to carve their own path — if only to avoid polarizing potential viewers.

Still, top-ranking female politicians are turning into an interestingly timed Hollywood trend. There’s three shows with first female vice presidents — HBO has its comedy series Veep, ABC’s Scandal has a female vice president angling to become the first female president, and last week TNT announced casting for Agent X, which has Sharon Stone playing the first female vice president.
