A Coca-Cola ad that ran during the Super Bowl prompted outrage and praise on Twitter for embracing diversity. The ad titled “It’s Beautiful” had classic scenes of American life — pool parties, open roads, loving families — while “America the Beautiful played in the background. Who could object to that? Well, the patriotic classic song was sung in different languages, plus the visuals included a gay couple with their daughter.
According to GLAAD, this is the first Super Bowl ad to feature a gay family. GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis responded to the ad: “Including a gay family in this ad is not only a step forward for the advertising industry, but a reflection of the growing majority of Americans from all walks of life who proudly support their LGBT friends, family and neighbors as integral parts of ‘America the Beautiful.'”
