CBS midseason changes, comedies on the move

CBS is shuffling around its Thursday night comedy lineup and setting premiere dates for new show Bad Teacher and the return of Unforgettable.

First up, Robin Williams’s freshman comedy The Crazy Ones will switch places with 11-year veteran Two and a Half Men starting Feb. 27. That means Men will move to 9 p.m. and Crazy Ones will shift to 9:30 p.m.

Why the switch? Both comedies have been struggling a bit lately, but not hugely unequally so. Since the 9 p.m. slot is closer to the nuclear viewership blast of 8 p.m.’ The Big Bang Theory, Crazy Ones has been receiving a much bigger lead in of viewers coming out of fellow freshman The Millers at 8:30. Around this time of the year CBS will often make schedule changes to gauge how shows perform in different time periods, gathering data to help decide which shows they’re going to bring back for another season. Since neither Crazy Ones or The Millers is a lock to return, CBS probably wants to see how each performs with bigger/smaller lead-ins at this point. (More on TV show renewal odds).

A couple months later, new comedy Bad Teacher will replace Crazy Ones once the latter finishes its full 22-episode order on April 24. Based on the 2011 movie, Bad Teacher stars Ari Graynor as an “always inappropriate, fearless and unapologetic former trophy wife who masquerades as a teacher in order to find a new man after her wealthy husband leaves her.”

Finally, uncancel-able series Unforgettable returns on Friday April 4 at 8 p.m. The Poppy Montgomery procedural drama replaces Undercover Boss, which will have completed its season order.
