'Da Vinci's Demons' renewed, 'Breaking Bad' alum taking over as showrunner

Starz’ Da Vinci’s Demons is not only getting a third season, but also a new showrunner.

The historical fantasy has been picked up for another round by the pay cable network. Behind the scenes, creator David S. Goyer is stepping down as showrunner. Instead, Starz has tapped Emmy-winning TV drama veteran John Shiban, who has experience as a writer and producer on shows such as Fox’s The X Files, AMC’s Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels. Goyer will continue as an executive producer on the show.

“I’ve been a fan of John’s work for some time and I’m excited to add his voice to the mix,” Goyer said in a statement. Added Shiban: “Starz and Adjacent have given us an amazing playground to play in — I can’t wait to dig further into the untold history of Leonardo da Vinci.”

The thriller starring Tom Riley as da Vinci averages about 3.7 million viewers including DVR playback. With this renewal, Demons becomes Starz’ first original drama series since Spartacus to make it to a third season.
