Syfy's 'Dominion' poster stuns: Michelangelo meets Tarantino

Syfy’s angels-vs-mortals fantasy series Dominion launches this summer and below is the show’s head-turning marketing art. The series is based on the 2010 film Legion and stars Christopher Egan a rebellious young soldier who discovers he’s the unlikely savior of humanity after an army of lower angels wage war against mankind. Here’s the Michelangelo-meets-Tarantino marketing art (or, more precisely, Guido Reni meets John Woo). Syfy unleashes Dominion on June 19 and there’s more detail on the inspiration behind the poster below (would you believe this is a photo?). Click here for large-size image.

“I got the idea for the Dominion posters from thinking about how the show brings together something classical – angels – with something contemporary – Vegas,” says James Spence, senior vp of creative at Syfy. “Much like Banksy when he subverted classical paintings. I thought it would be really compelling to subvert a classic image of an angel with a contemporary image of a gunfight (of which there are many in the show!). We worked with photographer Peter Lippmann to build up our image. Peter is a master of shooting images that look like they’ve been painted. The result is an image that at first glance appears like a renaissance image – the light, color and form of the image adheres to all the classic tropes – but on second glance it’s anything but.”
