Season 6 of The Voice finally has a winner! Find out what this season’s champion and his or her coach had to say about the victory below. WARNING: Major spoilers ahead!
NBC’s The Voice crowned Team Usher’s Josh Kaufman as its newest winner Tuesday night, and EW was on the scene for Kaufman’s first official press conference — directly after he was announced as season 6’s victor.
“It feels amazing! It’s been the story of the show [that] either Adam wins or Blake wins, and eventually, you have to change that,” said Kaufman. His triumph marked the first time in the show’s history that neither Adam Levine nor Blake Shelton took home the top honor for their team.
For his part, Kaufman’s coach couldn’t be more thrilled to be the one to end the SheVine dynasty. Usher also said that Kaufman’s win is big motivation for returning to coach another season somewhere down the line. “This is definitely a great way to close season 6, and obviously gives great reason and logic to come back and defend the title. But more than that, what Josh just said, to change the idea of what type of winner wins and what it takes to win,” said Usher. “The win was every bit of what I hoped for, and losing was not an option.”
Usher also addressed the matter of last night’s iTunes Store glitch, which caused the sales of Monday night’s singles to be discounted from the final vote. “I think Josh put up an incredible performance and fight during this competition. And though there had been a glitch, it is undeniable that he is the voice for more than just the vote…a man like himself can come to The Voice and be a shining example of what you can do when you have determination, passion, and commitment,” Usher declared.
As for Kaufman, the soul singer said that the glitch — which made his rendition of Adele’s “Set Fire To The Rain” difficult for fans to find and purchase — made for a pretty stressful night. “I had no idea how it would affect things — for all I knew, it wouldn’t — but it was just kind of that feeling of, ‘wait a minute, what’s going on? How do I deal with this?'” said the singer. “But I know so many people were working behind the scenes to figure it all out, and they did.”
What’s next for Kaufman? The winner says that after spending some much needed quality time with his family, he plans to hit the studio to work on his debut album. While Kaufman says he still isn’t sure what direction his own original work will take, he adds that fans can be sure to expect something with a lot of soul.
“At the root of everything I do is kind of a soulfulness, so that’s gonna be there at the heart of whatever [the album] is,” said Kaufman. “I think you can take that and add a pop element, you can add rock into that. You can go a lot of different directions…but I wanna try and find a balance between something that’s classic and something that is modern at the same time.”
