There is a lot more than science happening in the town of Los Alamos, New Mexico.

WGN America just released the trailer for their new scripted drama series Manhattan, set in 1943 Los Alamos. There, a team of the free world’s best and brightest worked to find a way to build an atomic bomb and, if Manhattan is to be believed, struggled through international intrigue and family drama along the way.

Manhattan marks WGN America’s second original series, the first being the witch-filled 17th-century drama Salem. John Benjamin Hickey (The Big C, The Good Wife) stars as Frank Winter, a professor commissioned to lead the Manhattan project. Olivia Williams (RushmoreDollhouse) plays his wife, Liza Winter, a botanist with a past. Daniel Stern (Home Alone), Ashley Zukerman (Rush), and Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards) also star among an ensemble of scientists, scientists’ wives, and serious men in Army uniforms.

The series, which premieres on July 27, is directed by Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing) and created and written by Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex). Like Masters of Sex, it promises cute mid-century outfits, complex drama, and plot points based in actual history. Unlike Masters of Sex, there is a lot of dust and a lot of bombs.

WGN has previously released a teaser that focused on the drama’s central relationships. The new footage expands that theme to the whole town, promising that “the most explosive secrets…are personal” — because we already know that the most explosive explosions, are explosions.
