Who’s that girl? It’s… an Idiot.
That’s according to New Girl‘s season 4 imagery. EW can exclusively reveal the first one-sheet for the Fox comedy, which finds Jess (Zooey Deschanel) in fine company, including—but not limited to—her ex-boyfriend/roomfriend Nick (Jake Johnson). After enduring a post-breakup couples cruise and deciding to put a pin in their romantic relationship in the season-three finale, the roomfriends are set to navigate the choppy waters of cohabitation when the show returns this fall.
“Roommates. Lovers. Idiots.” This verbiage does beg a few questions: Does deeming Nick and Jess “idiots” serve as a judgment? Did they made a mistake? Or are viewers simply being teed up for standard sitcom idiocy? Can we lump exes Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) in as idiots, too? And, for that matter, what about almost-lovers Cece and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr., making his New Girl key art debut)? Is Winston (Lamorne Morris) a master shade-thrower or what? And where is Furguson?!
New Girl returns on Sept. 16. Until then, only a few things are for sure: Jessica Biel will guest star as a rival for Jess in the premiere, and Deschanel is confident the narrative reset for Nick, Jess, and the rest of the loftmates will open up a lot of doors, story- and comedy-wise. “The best thing about these characters is that they’re so great when they’re at odds,” she told EW at the end of season three. “Having conflict with them is good, and having [Nick and Jess] always being in love with each other but never really being able to get it together [offers] so many possibilities.”
