Shark Week reels in fewer viewers, yet catches record demos

Discovery’s annual chum-n-fun Shark Week programming stunt has reeled in slightly fewer viewers this year, yet delivered record-setting numbers in a couple key demographics.

Sunday’s opener hooked an average of 3.6 million viewers, down 10 percent from 2013. Specifically, Air Jaws: Fin of Fury at 8 p.m. had 3.3 million viewers, while 9 p.m.’s Shark of Darkness: Wrath of Submarine had 3.8 million viewers. Among a couple of key demos like 18-49 and 25-54, however, the shows represented record highs—marking the biggest ratings in the 27-year history of Shark Week, which is good enough for Discovery to take a victory lap.

Shark Week continues tonight with new specials Jaws Strikes Back and Monster Hammerhead at 9 and 10 p.m., respectively. Plus, late-night show Shark After Dark airs live through Thursday, with tonight’s guest actor Danny Trejo (Machete) and Fast N’ Loud’s Richard Rawlings.
