'Teen Wolf': Why the Benefactor's identity goes back to season one

As if the fourth season of Teen Wolf weren’t already the show’s most dangerous (do you even have nails left to bite at this point?), the stakes are getting even higher.

On tonight’s episode “Time of Death,” there’s a little too much time spent around dead bodies—especially one who looks quite a bit like Scott (Tyler Posey). But that’s to be expected, since Argent (JR Bourne), Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) and Scott have a plan to draw out the Benefactor, the mysterious, money-dishing, assassin-hiring enigma who has put all of Beacon Hills’ supernatural beings on high alert. The clock is ticking, but whenever there’s a plan on Teen Wolf, there’s always something interfering—and as usual it’s Kate, the werejaguar who just won’t die.

Executive producer Jeff Davis tells EW that the series is getting even more suspenseful as the season’s second half ramps up. Next week’s episode will reveal (spoiler) the identity of the Benefactor, “which is actually not as simple an answer as it might appear,” says Davis. “It brings up big questions answered in the final three episodes—events that go back to the very first season of Teen Wolf, with secrets revealed about what happened after the Hale fire.” Somehow, it doesn’t seem like things will be nearly as happy-go-lucky as they were back in 2011.

Watch an exclusive clip of tonight’s episode of Teen Wolf—and, in the immortal words of 3B Void Stiles, get ready to lose your mind.
