Andrew Klavan, who wrote the novel on which Clint Eastwood’s True Crime was based, will write the screenplay for Gosnell, a TV movie about Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia “house of horrors” abortion doctor who was found guilty of murder in 2013. The movie was funded through an extremely successful Indiegogo campaign which raised more than its initial $2.1 million goal.

In the campaign, filmmakers Phelim McAleer, Ann McElhinney, and Magdalena Segieda argued that “Indiegogo allows us to bypass the Hollywood studios and the usual funding sources for movies. Hollywood never would fund a movie such as this.” The campaign received support from conservative actors like Nick Searcy and Kevin Sorbo. Klavan, who has scripted films including the 2008 horror movie One Missed Call, is also a conservative political commentator.

“I’ve been a crime writer all my life and I know a great crime story when I hear one,” Klavan said in a statement. “What really grabbed me about this is that, here you have the worst serial killer in American history—the banality of evil made flesh—and yet there’s this powerful bureaucratic inertia that provides him cover… Even when he’s been discovered, there’s this real reluctance to bring the truth to the public. The Gosnell murders were an inconvenient truth that no one wanted to tell it.”

The grand jury report on the Gosnell case (via the Washington Post) revealed abominable conditions, and that Gosnell performed illegal late-term abortions and would cut the spinal cords of babies born alive. As the Gosnell trial reached its end, the amount of coverage it was receiving became the subject of media scrutiny after USA Today column argued that the media was ignoring the case. The case was also politically controversial: As the New York Times reported: “While abortion rights groups argued that Dr. Gosnell operated far outside the legalities and norms of women’s health care, abortion opponents seized on the case to raise questions about the ethics of late-term abortions.”
