Laura Jane Grace of the punk rock band Against Me! will share her experiences and highlight the stories of other members of the trans community in True Trans, a new series for AOL announced today. “My earliest memories are of gender dysphoria,” Grace says in the trailer for the show, which will look at Grace’s history and her life after transition. You can watch the trailer here, and the series’ first four episodes will be available online October 10.
Grace gained fame as Tom Gabel, and came out as trans in 2012 in an interview with Rolling Stone when she was beginning the process of transition. “I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind,” Grace said in that interview.
It’s been a landmark year for transgender representation in the media. Orange Is the New Black‘s Laverne Cox covered Time in May and later became the first transgender person nominated for an acting Emmy. Amazon’s Transparent, about a family patriarch transitioning to a woman, will arrive later this month.
