WikiLeaks' Julian Assange to guest on 'The Simpsons' -- EXCLUSIVE

SIMPSONS-ASSANGE

Here’s some news that we couldn’t wait to leak: Julian Assange will play himself in the 500th episode of The Simpsons! EW has learned exclusively that the WikiLeaks founder/editor-in-chief recorded a guest spot over the summer that is part of the animated Fox comedy’s landmark episode airing Feb. 19.

So, how did this casting curveball come about? Simpsons exec producer Al Jean says that series creator Matt Groening heard a rumor that the polarizing and elusive activist who runs the whistle-blowing website was interested in guest-starring on the series, “so we asked our casting director Bonnie Pietila — who had been able to unearth Thomas Pynchon and got Tony Blair to do the show — to find Mr. Assange. And she did.” Assange recorded his lines at a location unknown to Simpsons producers — he was and is still under house arrest in Britain — as Jean directed him remotely from Los Angeles. (“I was just given a number to call,” sums up Jean.) READ FULL STORY »

Steve Buscemi is back on the case: The Boardwalk Empire actor will appear in the Feb. 16 episode of 30 Rock, series creator/star Tina Fey tells EW. Buscemi — who has guest-starred on the NBC comedy multiple times and directed an episode — will not only reprise his role as private detective Len Wosniak, he’ll also helm this installment. Notes Fey of the plot: “After Jack (Alec Baldwin) gets mugged, he tries to reach out to his connections on the police force, [saying,] ‘I know Commissioner Ray Kelly. We have a column in IRISH ARGUMENTS WEEKLY, the only all-caps magazine. But he hasn’t gotten back to me on this.’ Jack wants Len to help him form a private police force where the salary starts at $5 million, so the police have the same interest in protecting the rich.”

Other guest stars on 30 Rock‘s sixth season include Mary Steenburgen, Emma Stone, Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, and Kristen Schaal.

British comedian Russell Brand took the stage at the end of the FX press tour to give TV critics a taste of his late-night talk show Strangely Uplifting (premiering in April), and wound up also giving them a trippy tour of his brain that had them chortling and shaking their heads. Here are the highlights:

• The show — which will shoot episodes two to three days in advance — will rely generously on interaction with a studio audience. “Basically it’s about the audience and Russell,” said exec producer-director Troy Miller. “We’re going to talk about things that are happening in the news and we’re going to talk about things that interest Russ…. It’s going to be soft news, hard news.” Brand later added: “You know how Louie is to the convention of sitcom, I would like this to be sort of news and topical comedy, very deconstructive, brilliantly put together by Troy… stripped of all nonsense, stripped of all subterfuge, no ‘Hello, coming up after the break,’ none of that rhubarb, just truth and beauty and humor.’” READ FULL STORY »

The 'Louie' TCA panel featuring Louis C.K.: 10 things we learned

Comedian Louis C.K. met with TV critics during FX’s press tour event, discussing everything from season 3 of his critically lauded comedy Louie to the “scar tissue” he developed from making Pootie Tang. Here are the highlights:

Louie heads back into production next month. C.K. wasn’t that forthcoming with story lines for season 3, but then again, he hasn’t written much of it yet. (He has four pages of notes.) “I’m terrified of season 3 not being as good as season 2,” he said.  “It keeps me up at night.”  He did note that season 3 would be different than season 2, in which he tried to “expose” and “illuminate” the world of standup. (And while talking to a group of reporters after the session, he seemed to indicate that the show will continue to deal with issue of mortality when he hinted that “some people will die.” Added C.K.: “I think one reason I like killing people on the show, it’s because when you have a TV show… you have power to change reality within the show. So I get to kill people. I get to decide who lives or dies. I don’t think this is good, I think it’s saying something bad about me.”) READ FULL STORY »
