Adam Levine: 'Shame on Randy Jackson' for dissing 'The Voice' -- VIDEO

The rivalry between American Idol and The Voice shows no signs of cooling down any time soon. On Friday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Voice coach Adam Levine took Idol‘s Randy Jackson to task for Jackson’s comments last month during TCA press tour that NBC’s upstart singing competition show is more for “second chance people” than true musical discoveries. “The winner of The Voice, I will remind you,” Jackson added, “was an artist who had a deal at Capitol Records for several years, a failed contract.”

“Shame on Randy Jackson for saying that,” Levine told DeGeneres, herself a former Idol judge. “Because he of anybody should know that if you’re in this business you need second, third, fourth and fifth chances. So we love and embrace having that being part of the show.” Levine, who was joined by fellow The Voice coaches Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton, does credit Jackson for being “a working musician [who's] had a lot of success,” but he contends Jackson’s comments were “irresponsible.”

'Game Change' trailer: Julianne Moore's Sarah Palin does NOT want to go back to Alaska

Tagged: ,

Our first look at Julianne Moore’s portrayal of Sarah Palin in the HBO film Game Change (premiering March 10) was but a fleeting glimpse of Palin’s vice-presidential candidate acceptance speech at the 2008 G.O.P. national convention. We get a whole lot more Palin in the second trailer released today, and it pulls no punches: Moore’s Palin looks like the unprepared loose cannon the non-fiction best seller the film is based on made her out to be. But lest you think the film is one-sided, Woody Harrelson’s McCain campaign operative Steve Schmidt calls Barack Obama “a man who has no major life accomplishments.”

It’s fair to say that no reality show singing competition winner has ever been on the kind of high-profile launching pad that The X Factor champion Melanie Amaro is about to experience: Her own Super Bowl commercial. EW spoke with Amaro a few days after she shot her Pepsi spot with pop music legend Elton John, and we have an exclusive shot of them both from the royally-themed advertisement below. Hulu announced today that the TV and movie streaming website will debut its first original scripted series, the political docudrama Battleground, on Feb. 14. Starring a cast of mostly young unknowns, the show chronicles a hardscrabble primary campaign for the Wisconsin senate. “People hate politics but they love elections,” exec producer J.D. Walsh said in a release. “Campaigns are about good versus evil, our team versus yours, relationships, temptations, power, unimaginable triumphs and heartbreaking defeats. I’m interested in the people behind the people.” You can check out the trailer for the show below:  READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' judges and producers diss 'The Voice'

For the first time in its history, American Idol will start its 11th season facing down competition from another network singing competition show: NBC’s The Voice, which launches its second season with a plum post-Super Bowl slot and will then start its regular two-hour berth on Mondays. While The Voice won’t go up directly against Idol, it was easy to see at the latter show’s TCA panel today in Pasadena that Idol‘s exec producers and judges are feeling a twinge competitive with their Mark Burnett-produced rival.

“The winner of The Voice, I will remind you, was an artist who had a deal at Capitol Records for several years, a failed contract,” said judge Randy Jackson of The Voice victor Javier Colon. “That show was almost ‘second chance people.’” READ FULL STORY »

Fox TCA round-up: 'Bones' creator says 'oh hell yes' to 8th season

Rest easy, Booth and Brennan fans. Bones creator Hart Hanson told reporters at the TCA press tour today that he is “very confident” that there will be an 8th season of the fan favorite Fox series. “Putting Booth and Brennan together, raising a child, we feel reinvigorated the series,” added Hanson, who feels there are an “infinite” number of murder stories available for Booth and Brennan to investigate.

Hanson was actually speaking to the TCA press about his Bones spin-off, The Finder – albeit via Skype, due a motorcycle accident on Tuesday that left him with a broken ankle. (At one point, one of the Finder panelists who was present on stage at TCAs — including stars Geoff Stults and Michael Clarke Duncan — asked Hanson if he was wearing pants. He wasn’t.) After a reporter commented that “The Finder” was a pretty “flat” title, Hanson and fellow exec producer Barry Josephson essentially conceded the point by admitting that they couldn’t find a better title — other options included Lost and Found and The Locator, “which sounded to me like a real estate show,” joked Hanson.

Here are the other highlights from other Fox mid-season panels for Naploeon Dynamite, New Girl, Raising Hope, and Breaking InREAD FULL STORY »

'Star Trek: The Next Generation' gets high-def makeover -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Twenty-five years ago, Star Trek: The Next Generation re-launched Gene Roddenberry’s “Wagon Train to the Stars” onto television and into the hearts of a generation of fans. To commemorate the anniversary, the series is being completely remastered into full high definition, a painstaking process that requires going back to the original film negatives and re-cutting each episode shot for shot. As this exclusive side-by-side look at the climax of the two-hour pilot “Encounter at Farpoint” makes clear, the result is pretty darn impressive (expand to full-screen view for the complete effect):  READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor': The runners-up talk about the future, and duetting with the winner

Both the third- and second-place winners of the first season of The X Factor were in fine spirits backstage after the show’s Thursday night finale. In contrast to their postshow interviews after Wednesday’s performance show, they were both far more relaxed and optimistic about their futures after the show. They spoke with reporters about their thoughts on the winner, and that charming duet of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” Since this introduction has been all kinds of tortured so as to keep it spoiler-free, let’s just get to the Q&As, shall we, where the night’s results can and will be promptly spoiled for all:  READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor': Are the judges returning next season? 'Maybe I won't be here,' jokes Simon (we think)

There’s been a fair amount of chatter in the last few days about whether The X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones will be returning for next season — reports Fox say are bunk since there will be “absolutely no discussions…about any contracts until the New Year.”

Still, that didn’t stop the press from asking all four judges about their designs on The X Factor‘s second season after Wednesday night’s performance finale show. (Jones did not speak with any non-TV media.) Here’s what they had to say (or, in some cases, studiously not say) to reporters backstage about it:  READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor': Josh, Chris, and Melanie on their superstar duets, and their friends back home

After giving their all for their final two songs — and just kinda getting through a Michael Jackson tribute — The X Factor finalists Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene, and Melanie Amaro were understandably rather zonked after the show. But they still took time to talk with EW about their respective duets with Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne, and R. Kelly; those raucous live via satellite visits to their hometowns; and their impressions of their fellow contestants. Check out what they had to say below, and see if you can tell which finalist was probably a bit less tired than the other ones:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was the rehearsal process like with Alanis?
JOSH KRAJCIK: Well, the first thing we did was hug when she came into the room. And we talked for a little bit. We sang it through a couple times. We went over what parts and how we would do it, and we sang for about an hour together. We just got a synergy going with each other. It was fun. She’s charming. She’s real. She’s sweet.  READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor' judges and finalists on the Top 3's favorite performances, and why you shouldn't count out the groups

X-FACTOR-THREE

You have to give the folks at The X Factor credit for consistancy: Even their finale week press conference, held today on the show’s main stage at CBS Television City, opened with a full lighting package, an introduction from host Steve Jones, and mentor/judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and L.A. Reid emerging from the mega-screen doors with finalists Melanie Amaro, Chris Rene, and Josh Krajcik. Before the press could ask any questions, we were even treated to a video package retracing the finalists’ “journeys” on the show.

After things finally did kick into gear, as is often the case with these kinds of “pressers” (to use the industry lingo), not a huge amount of news emerged from this event. Justin Bieber, Pitbull, and Ne-Yo will all perform on Thursday night’s finale, but there’s no word yet on which “superstar artist” (Simon’s words) will duet with the finalists on the Wednesday night show. Speaking of Wednesday night, Steve Jones had Melanie, Chris, and Josh pick from three cards to determine the order of the performances that night. Melanie drew the No. 1 card, which meant she got first dibs on when she wanted to sing, and she chose the final position. Chris had second choice, and he decided to sing second, which meant Josh will open the show.

There were a few other notable moments in the half-hour press event, though. Here are my top four impressions:  READ FULL STORY »
