'Skins' creator on controversy: 'Skins is in fact rather old fashioned'

Skins-MTV-creatorImage Credit: MTV; Inset: Martin McNeil/WireImage.comIn a statement released to MTV News, Bryan Elsley — who created the U.K. TV series Skins with his son Jamie Brittain in 2007, as well as the U.S. version of the show currently airing on MTV — addresses the current controversy surrounding Skins‘ depiction of the sex and drug use of teenage kids by actors who are actual teenagers themselves. Elsley calls the show a “rather old fashioned television series,” and adamantly defends its content as “a very serious attempt to get to the roots of young people’s lives. It tries to tell the truth. Sometimes that truth can be a little painful to adults and parents.” The full statement is below:  READ FULL STORY »

Keith Olbermann leaving MSNBC, replaced by Lawrence O'Donnell

keith-olbermannImage Credit: Frederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesMSNBC announced tonight that anchor Keith Olbermann is leaving the network. “MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract,” the network says in a statement. “The last broadcast of Countdown with Keith Olbermann will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The network also announced that, starting Monday, Jan. 24, The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell will take over Olbermann’s 8 p.m. ET timeslot. (O’Donnell has filled in for Olbermann in the past.) The Ed Show, hosted by Ed Schultz, will in turn move to O’Donnell’s 10 p.m. ET timeslot.

Olbermann’s departure comes in the midst of Comcast’s takeover of NBC Universal. Olbermann has hosted Countdown since 2003 and helped to rebuild the news channel. Here’s Olbermann’s sign-off from his final show Friday: READ FULL STORY »

History Channel cancels 'The Kennedys' miniseries

Kennedys-Holmes-KinnearImage Credit: Splash NewsThe History Channel announced that it would not broadcast the eight-part miniseries The Kennedys. “While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality,” said a network rep in a statement, “after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand. We recognize historical fiction is an important medium for storytelling and commend all the hard work and passion that has gone into the making of the series, but ultimately deem this as the right programming decision for our network.” (The Hollywood Reporter first reported the story.)  READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' exclusive: Exec. producers say no music videos, a single Top 20 semi-final round, and the end of gender parity

idol-2011Image Credit: Michael Becker/FoxFrom the new judges to the new set, the new bandleader to the music itself, American Idol is getting some serious work done for its tenth season. “We’re going ahead with a whole fresh change,” Idol exec producer Ken Warwick says to EW exclusively, “simply because we never thought in our wildest dreams that any show would last ten years on American television.”

Contrary to recent web reports, however, the show will definitely not be introducing a new music video challenge. The idea had been floated as a possibility at one point, but exec producer Cécile Frot-Coutaz tells EW that while contestants are already experiencing new challenges this season, “We’re certainly not going to do the music videos.” And exec. producer Nigel Lythgoe laughs off the idea that a country singer won’t be asked to do an R&B song. “If you do Motown, then I’m not sure [how] you’re going to sing an R&B song and give it your country flavor,” he tells EW. “You can’t suddenly go [in a painful country twang] ‘Staaaaap! In the naaeeemeee of loooaahve’ — so it’s not going to be like that. They’ve got to be clever with it.”

A source close to the show also tells EW that contestants will be limited to cover songs when singing for votes, and it is unlikely that voting will move online this season. And the source is quite firm that there was never a plan to bring Idol all stars back on the show in anything other than a performance capacity.

So what big changes are afoot this season on IdolREAD FULL STORY »

'American Idol' scoop: Ray Chew likely the new bandleader, but will we see much of the band?

Ray-Chew-IdolImage Credit: Paul Morigi/WireImage.comSeasoned television music director Ray Chew (SOS Saving Ourselves — Help for Haiti; the 2008 Democratic National Convention) will likely become the new bandleader for season 10 of American Idol, EW has confirmed, replacing Rickey Minor, who left Idol at the end of season 9 to be the new bandleader on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. (The Hollywood Reporter first reported Chew landing the Idol gig.)

Chew actually joined the Idol team this month during the new Las Vegas audition round, although at press time it was unclear whether his deal had been finalized for the bandleader gig for the rest of the season. Whether audiences will get to see much of Chew and the Idol band this season, however, remains very much an open question. Idol exec producer Ken Warwick tells EW exclusively that a revamped set this season could relocate the Idol band off camera. “At the moment, the [upper] tier that was where the band was is now going to be audience,” says Warwick. “The plan is that the band will come out when required. There’s going to be a whole new kind of arena feel to the whole proceeding.” As with much of Idol, these changes could still be revised several times over, but the move would be in keeping with the newfound emphasis on the contestants as vocal performers (e.g. the consistent drumbeat that they will no longer be able to “hide behind their guitars”). The last time the band remained mostly behind the scenes on Idol was back in season 3, when the show featured vocal powerhouses Fantasia Barrino, Jennifer Hudson, and La Toya London.

Michael Jackson estate demands Discovery Channel cancel autopsy show

Michael Jackson’s estate is demanding the Discovery Channel call off plans for a prime time show set to air Jan. 13 in the United Kingdom claiming to re-enact the star’s autopsy, the Associated Press is reporting. In an open letter sent to Discovery Communications on Wednesday, John Branca and John McClain of Jackson’s estate condemned the show as “in shockingly bad taste,” and inspired only ”blind desire to exploit Michael’s death, while cynically attempting to dupe the public into believing this show will have serious medical value.” Especially at issue was a print advertisement for the show of a body covered with a sheet, with one hand exposed wearing Jackson’s iconic sequined glove; Branca and McClain call the ad “debased, sick and insensitive.”

When reached by EW, U.S. and international reps for the Discovery Channel had no comment. Fans of the late singer started an online petition protesting the programming earlier this month that now has more than 9,000 signatures. On Dec. 13, the group posted a response it received from the Discovery Networks Viewer Relations department: “We are very sorry to hear that you have been disappointed by the scheduled broadcast of Michael Jackson’s Autopsy. Our programming covers a wide variety of topics, which we appreciate at times may not suit the tastes of some of our viewers,” it reads. “Michael Jackson was one of the world’s most important music artists in modern times. Throughout his life there was wide-ranging speculation about medical conditions that affected him. This documentary examines at the actual medical facts around those conditions to determine the true cause of his death, utilizing the official coroners’ report and professional opinions from a range of leading medical experts. We value all of our viewers’ feedback and will pass your comments on to the programming department.”

'American Idol': Contestants will perform in Vegas after Hollywood week, Top 12 may start tweeting

American Idol is going to Las Vegas. Roughly 60 contestants auditioning for the upcoming season of Idol will be performing Beatles songs on the same stage in the Las Vegas Mirage hotel that Cirque du Soliel performs its Beatles-themed show LOVE, an Idol insider confirms to EW. The contestants — winnowed down from the initial 325 potential superstars who made it to Hollywood week — will only be performing for judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, and not a live audience. The Vegas round will likely happen within the next week, perhaps by this weekend. (The Hollywood Reporter first reported the possibility of a Vegas trip.)

EW has also confirmed that, once the show finds its Top 12 finalists, Idol producers are seriously mulling increasing the coverage of the contestants inside the fabled Idol house. The insider points out that with likely more minors than ever in the Top 12, thanks to the new lower 15-years-old age requirement, several parents and/or guardians will likely be living in the Idol house as well, and that could make for some compelling television. (What is more unclear, and may be for quite some time, is where that “house” will be located in Los Angeles.) Another possibility: Giving each Top 12 contestant their own Twitter account, an experiment attempted last season with the Top 24, but eventually abandoned. Nothing has yet been set in stone, but it’s all part of an effort to make the contestants more accessible and relatable to Idol audiences. Fox has no comment on the reports.

Kevin Bacon exclusive: The actor talks about playing his own biggest fan. 'It's just so silly. I loved it.'

Kevin-Bacon-commercialIn the annals of celebrity ad appearances, Kevin Bacon’s recent spot for the Logitech Revue with Google TV — which has been lighting up the Internet for the better part of a week now — easily ranks as one of the strangest, and most endearing, in recent memory. As Ivan, the world’s biggest Kevin Bacon fan, the actor sports a paunch, thinning hair, and the most impressive collection of Kevin Bacon tchotchkes — posters, props, painted portraits, you name it — ever assembled inside a single ranch-style home. How did the actor dream up the character? Who came up with all that Bacon-phrenalia? And what does this mean for the famed Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game? The actor gamely phoned up EW to answer all these questions, and more.

But first, just in case you haven’t seen it yet, check out the 60 second ad:  READ FULL STORY »

Dan Aykroyd will reunite with Blues Brothers compatriot Jim Belushi on the CBS series The Defenders, according to a post to the network’s Twitter feed. The SNL star (and voice of the titular Yogi Bear in the upcoming holiday movie) will guest star in early 2011 on the legal dramedy as a “judge needing help.” Aykroyd, of course, originated the Blues Brothers with Belushi’s late brother John.

'Caprica': Final five episodes to air back-to-back on Jan. 4

SyFy has confirmed to EW that the final five episodes of the Battlestar Galactica-spinoff series Caprica will air back-to-back on Tuesday, Jan. 4 starting at 6 p.m. ET. Last month, SyFy cancelled the show after the second half of its first season struggled in the ratings; exec producer David Eick told EW that it was a “surprise” that SyFy yanked the rest of the episodes off the air. ”I understand that these are rarely simple decisions and I know the current leadership at Syfy genuinely loved the show and were hell-bent on protecting it and seeing it succeed,” Eick said. “Caprica was an extremely smart, unique show and it’ll take quite some time for me to get used to the idea that it’s really gone.” A “Save Caprica” campaign attempted to resurrect the show by sending the network over 650 pounds of apples to the network; alas, that was not quite enough. But don’t despair too much; SyFy has already greenlit a two-hour pilot BSG spinoff tentatively titled Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, this time set roughly ten years into the first Cylon war.

NBC pulls 'Glee' cast from Macy's Thanksgiving parade

Tags: News, Television

A source has confirmed to EW.com that the organizers of Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade were instructed by NBC, which broadcasts the event, to rescind an offer for the cast of rival network Fox’s hit series Glee to perform in the parade. (TMZ first reported the story.) Fox and NBC had no comment.

UPDATE: Macy’s spokesperson Orlando Veras sent EW.com this statement: “As with any live event, the talent booking process is a fluid one subject to frequent updates or changes. Due to this fact, we don’t confirm talent appearances for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade until early November when the final line-up is determined.”

UPDATE 2: Another source close to the event confirmed to EW.com that while the parade has featured talent from other networks — American Idol singers, High School Musical actors — there was concern that featuring the entire cast of a rival’s show amounted to outright promotion.
