Image Credit: MTV; Inset: Martin McNeil/WireImage.comIn a statement released to MTV News, Bryan Elsley — who created the U.K. TV series Skins with his son Jamie Brittain in 2007, as well as the U.S. version of the show currently airing on MTV — addresses the current controversy surrounding Skins‘ depiction of the sex and drug use of teenage kids by actors who are actual teenagers themselves. Elsley calls the show a “rather old fashioned television series,” and adamantly defends its content as “a very serious attempt to get to the roots of young people’s lives. It tries to tell the truth. Sometimes that truth can be a little painful to adults and parents.” The full statement is below: READ FULL STORY »

Keith Olbermann leaving MSNBC, replaced by Lawrence O'Donnell
Image Credit: Frederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesMSNBC announced tonight that anchor Keith Olbermann is leaving the network. “MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract,” the network says in a statement. “The last broadcast of Countdown with Keith Olbermann will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”
The network also announced that, starting Monday, Jan. 24, The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell will take over Olbermann’s 8 p.m. ET timeslot. (O’Donnell has filled in for Olbermann in the past.) The Ed Show, hosted by Ed Schultz, will in turn move to O’Donnell’s 10 p.m. ET timeslot.
Olbermann’s departure comes in the midst of Comcast’s takeover of NBC Universal. Olbermann has hosted Countdown since 2003 and helped to rebuild the news channel. Here’s Olbermann’s sign-off from his final show Friday: READ FULL STORY »
'Game of Thrones', 'Spartacus', Sarah Palin, Lady Gaga, and Oprah: This week at TCA Press Tour
Image Credit: Helen Sloan/HBOFrom budget-busting period epics to reality TV about extreme couponing, the vast world of basic-and-pay cable took center stage this week at the Television Critics Association midseason Press Tour in Pasadena, Calif., when the networks trot out their upcoming slate of shows for a throng of TV journalists. Here are the highlights, including all of EW’s scoopage during the TV confab:
HBO’s high anticipated Game of Thrones made a big impact, announcing its premiere date, teasing details of a fifth book in George R.R. Martin’s series, and screening 15 minutes of footage for eager TCA journos.- Starz’s swords-and-sandals-and-blood-and-leather-codpieces epic series Spartacus will get a second season without title star Andy Whitfield, who had to withdraw from the show to resume treatment for cancer. (His replacement has yet to be cast.) The network also premiered a new trailer for the Spartacus prequel miniseries, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. READ FULL STORY »
History Channel cancels 'The Kennedys' miniseries
Image Credit: Splash NewsThe History Channel announced that it would not broadcast the eight-part miniseries The Kennedys. “While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality,” said a network rep in a statement, “after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand. We recognize historical fiction is an important medium for storytelling and commend all the hard work and passion that has gone into the making of the series, but ultimately deem this as the right programming decision for our network.” (The Hollywood Reporter first reported the story.) Michael Jackson estate demands Discovery Channel cancel autopsy show
Michael Jackson’s estate is demanding the Discovery Channel call off plans for a prime time show set to air Jan. 13 in the United Kingdom claiming to re-enact the star’s autopsy, the Associated Press is reporting. In an open letter sent to Discovery Communications on Wednesday, John Branca and John McClain of Jackson’s estate condemned the show as “in shockingly bad taste,” and inspired only ”blind desire to exploit Michael’s death, while cynically attempting to dupe the public into believing this show will have serious medical value.” Especially at issue was a print advertisement for the show of a body covered with a sheet, with one hand exposed wearing Jackson’s iconic sequined glove; Branca and McClain call the ad “debased, sick and insensitive.”
When reached by EW, U.S. and international reps for the Discovery Channel had no comment. Fans of the late singer started an online petition protesting the programming earlier this month that now has more than 9,000 signatures. On Dec. 13, the group posted a response it received from the Discovery Networks Viewer Relations department: “We are very sorry to hear that you have been disappointed by the scheduled broadcast of Michael Jackson’s Autopsy. Our programming covers a wide variety of topics, which we appreciate at times may not suit the tastes of some of our viewers,” it reads. “Michael Jackson was one of the world’s most important music artists in modern times. Throughout his life there was wide-ranging speculation about medical conditions that affected him. This documentary examines at the actual medical facts around those conditions to determine the true cause of his death, utilizing the official coroners’ report and professional opinions from a range of leading medical experts. We value all of our viewers’ feedback and will pass your comments on to the programming department.”
Kevin Bacon exclusive: The actor talks about playing his own biggest fan. 'It's just so silly. I loved it.'
In the annals of celebrity ad appearances, Kevin Bacon’s recent spot for the Logitech Revue with Google TV — which has been lighting up the Internet for the better part of a week now — easily ranks as one of the strangest, and most endearing, in recent memory. As Ivan, the world’s biggest Kevin Bacon fan, the actor sports a paunch, thinning hair, and the most impressive collection of Kevin Bacon tchotchkes — posters, props, painted portraits, you name it — ever assembled inside a single ranch-style home. How did the actor dream up the character? Who came up with all that Bacon-phrenalia? And what does this mean for the famed Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game? The actor gamely phoned up EW to answer all these questions, and more.
But first, just in case you haven’t seen it yet, check out the 60 second ad: READ FULL STORY »
Dan Aykroyd to reunite with Jim Belushi on 'The Defenders'
Dan Aykroyd will reunite with Blues Brothers compatriot Jim Belushi on the CBS series The Defenders, according to a post to the network’s Twitter feed. The SNL star (and voice of the titular Yogi Bear in the upcoming holiday movie) will guest star in early 2011 on the legal dramedy as a “judge needing help.” Aykroyd, of course, originated the Blues Brothers with Belushi’s late brother John.
'Caprica': Final five episodes to air back-to-back on Jan. 4
SyFy has confirmed to EW that the final five episodes of the Battlestar Galactica-spinoff series Caprica will air back-to-back on Tuesday, Jan. 4 starting at 6 p.m. ET. Last month, SyFy cancelled the show after the second half of its first season struggled in the ratings; exec producer David Eick told EW that it was a “surprise” that SyFy yanked the rest of the episodes off the air. ”I understand that these are rarely simple decisions and I know the current leadership at Syfy genuinely loved the show and were hell-bent on protecting it and seeing it succeed,” Eick said. “Caprica was an extremely smart, unique show and it’ll take quite some time for me to get used to the idea that it’s really gone.” A “Save Caprica” campaign attempted to resurrect the show by sending the network over 650 pounds of apples to the network; alas, that was not quite enough. But don’t despair too much; SyFy has already greenlit a two-hour pilot BSG spinoff tentatively titled Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, this time set roughly ten years into the first Cylon war.
