The Desperate Housewives drama is about to transfer from Wisteria Lane to the courtroom: Today marks the first day of Nicollette Sheridan’s wrongful termination trial against ABC and Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry. The dispute dates back to April 2010, when the actress filed a lawsuit against Cherry for assault and battery, gender violence, wrongful termination, and “intentional infliction of emotional distress,” claiming the series creator had fired her after she had complained about his “demeaning” and “unprofessional” behavior. (Sheridan’s character, Edie Britt, was killed off in the series’ fifth season.) Later that year, Sheridan dropped the assault and battery charges, but still pursued wrongful termination charges, while lawyers for Cherry claimed that he had decided to kill off Edie months before their argument for cost-cutting purposes. New episodes of 'The Colbert Report' returning this week

After taking an abrupt hiatus last week, The Colbert Report will be returning this week with new episodes, EW has confirmed with Comedy Central. Last Wednesday, audience members who had planned to attend a new taping of the show were surprised with an email informing them that the taping was canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The network later announced no new episodes would be filmed for the remainder of the week.

Comedy Central is keeping mum about why The Colbert Report went dark last week, but reports had claimed that the series suspended production because host Stephen Colbert’s 91-year-old mother was ailing. (The host himself is keeping quiet as well, but tweeted Friday, “My family and I would like to thank everyone who has offered their thoughts and prayers. We are grateful and touched by your concern.” Guests scheduled to appear on The Colbert Report this week are Ann Patchett (Feb. 20), Robert Kagan (Feb. 21), Nancy Pelosi (Feb. 22), and Placido Domingo (Feb. 23).

Pretty great news for a former Ugly Betty star: Ana Ortiz is poised to return to ABC, having been cast in Marc Cherry’s pilot Devious Maids. EW has confirmed that Ortiz has been cast as one of four maids “with ambition and dreams of their own” who work for some of the richest families in Beverly Hills. (Deadline first reported the news.) Dania Ramirez is also set to star in the pilot; Ortiz plays Marisol, a woman with a college degree and a secret reason for wanting to work in the house-cleaning industry.

On the same network, Anthony LaPaglia has been cast in the drama pilot Americana, about a fashion designer who welcomes a newbie into his family and label. LaPaglia previously starred in CBS’ Without A Trace.

Jimmy Fallon, NBC sued for alleged 'gender bias' in the workplace

A former stage manager for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon has filed a lawsuit against NBC Universal, Fallon, and employees of Late Night, alleging that the show has a gender bias. In papers filed in New York on Jan. 10, Paul Tarascio–a former stage manager for Late Night With Conan O’Brien–claims he was demoted to while working for Fallon after being told by Late Night director David Diomdi, ”Jimmy just prefers to take direction from a woman.” Tarascio–who says he was told he had received his first job as a “last resort” because a woman was not available–alleges that he was then replaced by “a less qualified woman” who was “immediately a disaster.” When he complained about being replaced by a woman, Tarascio says he was told, “You know Jimmy. He loves his woman.”

The court papers obtained by EW claim Tarascio was fired after he had complained to show officials and union representatives, and that his position was allegedly filled by a woman. “Mr. Fallon’s conduct and attitudes towards show positions further evidences the gender bias which resulted in the discriminatory conduct towards [Tarascio],” the lawsuit reads. Tarascio is seeking punitive damages; reps for Late Night and Jimmy Fallon have yet to respond to EW’s request for comment. NBC is facing another late-night related lawsuit: Jay Leno and the network has been sued by a religious organization leader who took issue with the host’s jab linking Mitt Romney’s wealth and a Sikh religious site.

Harry Morgan, the actor otherwise known as M*A*S*H‘s Colonel Potter, has passed away, according to The New York Times. Morgan, who died in his Los Angeles home, was 96 years old.

Though Morgan is most well-known for his role on M*A*S*H, he was a prolific actor on the big and small screen, starring in such TV programs as Dragnet, Pete and Gladys, and The D.A, and appearing in over 100 movies. But, still, Morgan had said that Potter was “the best part I ever had” — one that even won him an Emmy in 1980. The actor was so fond of the character, he even played Potter in AfterMASH, a spin-off only lasting two years.

Later in life, Morgan continued acting in television, guest starring on such shows as 3rd Rock From the Sun and Murder, She Wrote. The actor is survived by his wife and three sons.

Discovery speaks out on 'MythBusters' cannonball accident

Following a MythBusters experiment that sent a cannonball busting through the home of a family in California, the Discovery series has issued a statement about the incident. Confirming that no one was hurt from the misfire — which occurred during filming at the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department bomb range in Alameda County, Calif. — Discovery and Beyond Productions explain how things went awry: “During the testing, a cannonball took an unforeseen bounce from a safety berm … Sgt. JD Nelson, Public Information Officer and bomb technician for the Alameda County Sheriff’s office, who is a regular safety explosives expert for MythBusters, was on site and all proper safety protocol was observed. Beyond Productions is currently assessing the situation and working with those whose property was affected.”

Though there were no injuries, there was damage to the home and a parked car. “We had some tremendous bad luck and some tremendous good luck,” Sgt. Nelson told the Associated Press.

New Girl is getting some new blood, courtesy of True Blood. The HBO series’ Ryan Kwanten is set to guest star on the Valentine’s Day episode of the Zooey Deschanel-fronted Fox sitcom, EW confirms. Deschanel’s single-and-ready-to-mingle Jess, in hopes of a one-night stand, meets his attractive character in a bar. Unfortunately, she discovers they have nothing in common.

So, looks as though Kwanten won’t be Jess’ new man. But we’ll have to tune in to see if her Valentine’s Day still sucks. (Sorry, any True Blood-related post pretty much demands at least one vampire pun, right?) [E! Online]

'A Michael Buble Christmas': This digital short with Ed Helms could take your breath away -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Christmas just makes you all warm and bubbly, doesn’t it? Or should I say warm and Bublé? After all, we’re going to get to enjoy a new holiday special this year, A Michael Bublé Christmas. On Dec. 6 (at 8 p.m. ET), the crooner is headlining his first Christmas special on NBC, and will welcome several familiar faces to help him sing classics like “White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Some famous folks along for the (sleigh) ride: Justin Bieber, Oscar the Grouch, and Kellie Pickler, among others.

But Bublé’s not just relying on his vocals to sell the special — he’s also going to be showcasing his comedy chops. The singer is teaming with The Office star Ed Helms in a series of digital shorts set during a 1974 Christmas special that went awry. (Holy Movember, check out that ‘stache!) After the jump, see one of those shorts, exclusively on EW. It’s a good antidote for those of us going though Hamm and Bublé withdrawal. READ FULL STORY »

'Millionaire Matchmaker': Sparks fly at the series' first-ever reunion -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Ah, the Bravo reality show reunion. As we’ve learned from the Real Housewives franchise, it is something to be treasured. So how exciting that the network plans to air, according to Andy Cohen, “a reunion five years in the making” for another one of its popular series, Millionaire Matchmaker? And, if this exclusive preview is any indication, Patti Stanger’s two-part reunion with some of her most memorable clients will be just as dramatic as those involving the ladies of Orange County. We see some familiar faces: The oversexed millionairess, the millionaire who broke Stanger’s No. 1 rule, and the millionairess who enjoys showing men films of herself on the first date. The latter client seems to have the biggest beef with Stanger, even going as far as to insult the recently single matchmaker’s personal life: “Everybody knows you’re miserable.”

Plus! “A bombshell proposal!” Watch the exclusive sneak peek for the two-part reunion, airing Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Penn State scandal: Advertisers pulling commercials from college's football games

Many might have tuned in to Saturday’s Penn State game, but some advertisers will not take advantage of the extra eyes tuning in in the wake of the college’s sexual assault scandal. Following this week’s news that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky had allegedly sexually abused several young boys, advertisers backed out of airing spots during Saturday’s game, as well as upcoming Penn State matches. The Wall Street Journal reports up to a half dozen companies — including Cars.com — have pulled out of airing their commercials on ESPN’s broadcast of Penn State football. “The school’s image is damaged and brands will disassociate,” sports marketer Kevin Adler, of Engage Marketing, told WSJ.

Penn State may also have to worry about its corporate sponsors as well. According to the WSJ, sponsors like PepsiCo Inc., have yet to make any movement, but General Motors Co., says it is “reviewing” its attachment to the school. (Highmark Inc., however, says they are sticking with Penn State.) A rep for ESPN has not immediately responded for EW’s request for comment.
