'Revenge': Who should play Emily's mom?

REVENGE-MOM

During Wednesday’s high-octane finale of Revenge, it was revealed that Emily (Emily Van Camp) may not be alone in this world after all.

Her mother lives!

That means a new foe for Victoria will pop up in season 2. Oh, the possibilities! To whet our appetites, this is what creator Mike Kelley had to say about the new part to EW’s Tanner Stransky: “What we really want to do is find the perfect actor for the role. It would be really great for her to be as formidable as Madeleine [Stowe], but it’s a completely different part. What you’re going to discover about the woman who was Emily’s mother is the circumstances under which they were separated and you’re going to find that there’s some deep psychological issues with her, which I think is going to be fun for us to explore. For Emily, she’s going to start seeing some of the psychological damage that her mother has in herself.”

The challenge is finding the perfect woman who seems capable of inflicting such emotional damage (and able to go toe-to-toe mentally with the fierce Madeleine Stowe). If only Dana Delany weren’t tied up for another season in the low-rated Body of Proof; we like her chances opposite Victoria. At least there are plenty more 40-something women who could assume the part of Emily’s mother-from-hell.

Would Sigourney Weaver ever do a TV soap? Perhaps that’s wishful thinking. What about Sharon Stone? We heard rumblings that she was approached for the pilot. And what about Marcia Cross?

So many choices. Fortunately, there are plenty of 40-something women who are up for the job. Take our poll below…or add a few of your own!

'True Blood' lines up new showrunner

HBO has lined up a showrunner for True Blood if the vampire drama is ordered for a sixth season.

Now that Executive Producer Alan Ball has decided to step back from his head writer duties after the fifth season that begins June 10, the pay network will bring in co-executive producer Mark Hudis to fill the void. Hudis has worked in the True Blood writers room with Ball since season 4.

In February, HBO released a statement saying that “if we proceeded to True Blood’s sixth season that Alan would take a supervisory role on the series and not be the day-to-day showrunner.  If we proceed to season six, the show will remain in the very capable hands of the talented team of writers and producers who have been with the show for a number of years. This is the best possible world for both HBO and Alan Ball.”

Hudis’ other credits include Nurse Jackie and Miss Guided.

Joan Rivers will join Kim Kardashian, Patty Duke, Serena Williams and Brandy Norwood as a guest star on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva this season.

Rivers will play Jane’s subconscious in two episodes. She first appears in Jane’s (Brooke Elliott) dreams as a … shrink?

You’re just like Madonna with her 23-year-old boyfriends. You’re not fooling anyone,” she tells Jane.

Rivers’ episodes will air in July.

Drop Dead Diva returns to Lifetime on June 3.

It ain’t the sexiest comedy in prime time, but it performs — which is why CBS decided to pick up yet another season of Rules of Engagement.

The Eye ordered 13 more episodes of the comedy that stars David Spade and Patrick Warburton. This season, Rules averaged a 3.3 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 10.2 million. It is CBS’ fifth most watched comedy, slightly more than How I Met Your Mother. Yes, you read that right.

Rules will serve as a midseason replacement.

'Community' hires new showrunners; Dan Harmon to consult

SATURDAY UPDATE: Dan Harmon addresses Community exit on his Tumblr blog: “I got fired”

ORIGINAL POST: Two new writer/producers will take over as showrunners on Community, NBC’s cult hit that attracted a wave of publicity this spring when word of a feud between Creator Dan Harmon and star Chevy Chase went public.

David Guarascio and Moses Port — best known for their work on Aliens in America and Just Shoot Me — will take over on the comedy that just received a 13-episode pickup by NBC for a fourth season. Harmon will remain on the show as a consulting producer.

In April, Harmon (pictured, left) issued an apology via his Tumblr for publicly playing a profanity-laced voicemail from Chase. Their feud supposedly began during the shooting of the comedy’s final episode, when Chase left the set following a dispute over dialogue. At the wrap party, Harmon reportedly tried to lead the crowd in a nasty chant against Chase, whose wife and daughter were present. That prompted Chase’s R-rated phone call.

Community will move to Fridays this fall.  While talking to reporters about the fall schedule last week, NBC Entertainment President Bob Greenblatt said there were “conversations happening” regarding Harmon and whether he would remain the top writer-producer on the series. “I expect Dan’s voice to be a part of the show somehow, I’m just not sure if that means he’s running it day-to-day or consulting on it,” Greenblatt said.

'Cougar Town' to shop for new showrunner

cougar-town_320.jpg

Good — and kinda not so good — news for the cast of Cougar Town: Though the show earned a 15-episode pickup from TBS for 2013, the former ABC comedy will lose Bill Lawrence as its showrunner in the process.

Lawrence has a deal with Warner Bros. TV and, as a result, is expected to develop new shows for the studio, so Cougar Town will go on the hunt for a new head writer to oversee the show’s run on TBS. Lawrence, however, will remain an executive producer on the show.

But fear not, fans! Lawrence went out of his way to calm his many followers on Twitter yesterday by first reminding them to “chill” and then saying how he and co-creator Kevin Biegel “currently have shows, so we will both work on CT.” He also added that, “if we do get shizz going, we need great guy in place.”

Later, Lawrence said, “My wife is on the show – you think she’ll let me disappear?  Please.  Not like SCRUBS 9 (when had other show to run).  Kev and I are in…” He is married to Christa Miller, who plays Ellie.

In addition, CBS will bow a new drama called Golden Boy in midseason that tracks one cop’s meteoric rise from officer to detective to police commissioner. There is also a new comedy called Friend Me, about twentysomething best friends, Evan and Rob, who move from their hometown of Bloomington, Ind., to Los Angeles to begin their exciting new lives working at GroupOn.

Undercover Boss will be back, too, as well as a new Mark Burnett show called The Job. It’s a competition that leads to a dream job.

No ruling yet, however, on whether Rules of Engagement will return.

Who's going to leave 'Glee' next season?

Tags: ,
Glee-Lea-Michele-Cory

At Fox’s upfront presentation in New York Monday, Glee stars Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith joined lots of other network stars on the Beacon Theatre stage to help promote the new season. But they weren’t there to sing. They weren’t even there to talk about the big finale and what’s next for their characters.

They let Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly answer the burning questions, instead. Rather than pursue a plan announced earlier this season to spin off graduates Rachel, Kurt and Finn, Glee will now feature a “show within a show.” By having some of the characters move to New York — where guest stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson are expected to interact with the Ohio transplants  – Fox and Creator Ryan Murphy could simultaneously reinvigorate the dramedy by bringing in new students to McKinley High.

The only question now is how much we will — or won’t — see of the graduates next season. Over the next month, Murphy and the show’s studio, 20th Century Fox TV, will decide who will remain a series regular and who is more likely to recur. It doesn’t look that great for Amber Riley (Mercedes), Mark Salling (Puck) or even Naya Rivera (Santana): From what we hear, Glee will not be showing scenes from Los Angeles, where Mercedes wanted to score a record contract, Santana hoped to become an actor, and Puck dreamed of starting a pool cleaning business (yikes). For now, Fox can’t say what’s in store for season 4, but Riley sent this suspicious Tweet today that suggests she may be moving on: “Thank you Ryan Murphy for believing in me and helping me move forward in my career! Season 4 is going to be amazing.”

For what it’s worth, Rivera was also on stage Monday — as was Darren Criss, Jenna Ushkowitz and Jane Lynch — so maybe Santana will change her mind and move to the Big Apple. Salling, however, was MIA. Maybe he was checking to see how many pools there are to clean in New York?

What are your predictions, Gleeks?

It's official: Britney Spears, Demi Lovato to join 'X Factor'

The worst kept secret at Fox was made official at the network’s upfront presentation in New York today: Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will join The X Factor as judges in the fall.

Spears and Lovato joined fellow judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid on the Beacon Theatre stage very briefly but long enough to express their enthusiasm for their new high-profile gigs.

“I’m ready to find the true star,” gushed Spears, who wore a very tight and very short white dress for the occasion.

“It’s an honor to be standing next to you,” continued Lovato (and she meant that for Cowell, not Spears). She, too, was clad in a short and tight tog. “It’s an honor to represent my generation.” READ FULL STORY »

No series finale for canceled 'CSI: Miami'

Tags: ,

Any David Caruso fan wanting to bid farewell to Lt. Horatio Caine will have to rely on sweet memories only: The canceled show already aired its last episode for this season on April 8 and will not resume production just to shoot a special series finale.

On Sunday — almost three months after CSI: Miami wrapped production in Los Angeles– CBS announced that the procedural will not return in the fall. CSI: New York, however, survived to see another day.

Both of the CSI spinoffs were tipped off early in the spring that one or both could face the chopping block come upfronts time. As a result, the Miami episode that aired in April did feature a send-off, of sorts: Most of the ensemble (save Emily Procter) were gathered in a bar at the end. Granted, it’s not exactly Ted Danson yelling “we’re closed!” from Cheers but hey, the gang was all there.

Meanwhile, Caruso thanked his fans “one and all” via Twitter today, along with this picture: READ FULL STORY »

CBS renews 'Two and a Half Men'

As expected, CBS has renewed Two and a Half Men for the fall season.

Men wraps its ninth season this month. It is averaging 15.0 million viewers, up 13 percent from last season, and a 5.2/13 in adults 18-49, up 27 percent.

Men is CBS’s fifth comedy and 19th series to be renewed for next season.
