'Days of Our Lives': See the debut of Ian Buchanan! -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Soap veteran Ian Buchanan — who’s had memorable roles on General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful and All My Children — comes to NBC on Thursday to play Ian McAllister on Days of Our Lives.

In this exclusive clip, Buchanan shows up as a very shady character from Madison’s (Sarah Brown) past who seems to have a strong hold over her and her company. As time goes by, we’ll also see that McAllister has a mysterious connection to Kate (Lauren Koslow), and that his presence in Salem will have an impact on Brady, Victor and Sonny. Oh my!

This isn’t Buchanan’s first time on the DOOL set. Previously, he performed a cameo as Lord Sheraton back in the late ’90s.

ABC picks up Mandy Moore pilot; orders soapy series for summer

The voice of Rapunzel in Tangled just scored a pilot gig at ABC.

The network just gave a big heck yes to a new comedy that will star Mandy Moore as a newlywed who “gets the opportunity of a lifetime to run a hip, new restaurant” in her hometown. At the same time, this new “opportunity” brings her closer to her “needy and high maintenance family.” Hilarity ensues! The comedy’s from Bob Fisher and Stacy Traub.

In the meantime, ABC is keeping the love alive for primetime soaps by ordering Mistresses to series. Targeted for summer, the show from KJ Steinberg is described by ABC as “a provocative thrilling drama that finds four women with scandalous romantic lives, caught in storms of excitement and self-discovery, secrecy and betrayal, and at the mercy of the complex relationships they’ve created.”

I seem to be caught in a storm of excitement, myself, over how many more Revenge-style dramas the network has in the works for next season. Speaking of which, have you checked out Grandpa Grayson?

Sarah Chalke books ABC comedy pilot

Categories: Casting, Fall TV, Scrubs

Will 2012 finally be the year that Sarah Chalke headlines her own successful TV show?

ABC is going to try to make it happen for fall: The network has cast the Scrubs vet in How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life, a comedy pilot from Claudia Lonow (Friends with Benefits). Chalke will play Polly, a recently divorced single mom moves in with her eccentric parents, Elaine and Max, a couple who are full of life but know no boundaries.

In 2010, Chalke headlined the short-lived CBS comedy Mad Love. She also memorably recurred on How I Met Your Mother as Stella while starring on Scrubs, the Bill Lawrence comedy that wrapped two years ago.

ABC tried to find a comedy for Chalke in 2010 by giving her the starring role in the ABC sitcom pilot Freshman, which never saw the light of day.

'X Factor': L.A. Reid will return for second year

The host and two of the judges on Fox’s The X Factor may be history, but at least one person is staying put alongside Simon Cowell. The option for L.A. Reid has been renewed so the judge/record mogul will stay with the Fox talent show for one more season.

Reid was originally tapped by Cowell because both men shared similar backgrounds, if not temperaments. (Reid could be just as harsh, if not more so, than Cowell during the show’s first season). Reid is a behind-the-scenes music mogul with a talent list that includes Mariah Carey, Pink, TLC and Usher. Could someone on that talent list now be tapped to replace judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, who were booted last week?

For now, it’s all speculation — but at least it’s keeping tongues wagging about Cowell’s show in the off-season, while NBC’s singing competition show The Voice revs up for a new season next week. THR was the first to report about Reid’s return.

Host Steve Jones will also depart the show, as Fox and Cowell make changes to the series after the first season performed solidly, but fell short of what many felt was the show’s high potential. (Factor delivered about 12.6 million viewers and a 4.4 average rating among adults 18-49 for its Wednesday episodes). The performances of Scherzinger and Jones were particularly panned by critics.

SAMCRO fans already knew that Sons of Anarchy, the FX drama about a group of outlaw bikers, will return for a fifth season. Now comes word that SOA was also picked up for a sixth year by FX — which is already considering a seventh season, as well.

At the same time, 20th Century Fox TV and FX Productions — which make SOA for FX — have closed a new three-year deal with Creator Kurt Sutter (pictured, left) to keep him at the helm of the critically-beloved drma while opening the door for him to develop more shows for other nets. (But first, let us know what’s to become of that snake Clay, eh Sutter?). Season 5 will air in the fall.

SOA finished season 4 as its highest-rated to date, building upon last year’s season average by 18% among adults 18-49 and 21% among total viewers. The drama that stars Ron Perlman and Katey Sagal is FX’s No. 1 program in history.
