If this isn’t the best piece casting news for fall, we don’t know what is: CBS just closed deals with Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis to star in a period piece about a real-life rodeo cowboy-turned-sheriff.

Quaid will make his series debut as Las Vegas lawdog Ralph Lamb in this untitled drama from writers Nicholas Pileggi and Greg Walker. Chiklis gets to chuck the white hat for a change and play a Chicago mob fixer named Johnny whose vision for building up Sin City doesn’t exactly gel with Lamb’s law-and-order approach.

Quaid has taken breaks from his lengthy film career by appearing in TV movies like HBO’s That Special Relationship in 2010.

Chiklis starred in the short-lived ABC drama No Ordinary Family after ending his Emmy-winning run on FX’s The Shield.

'Days of our Lives': Time for first gay kiss! -- PHOTO

A first gay kiss is no longer much of a milestone on broadcast TV, but for Days of our Lives it represents the latest effort to remain relevant at a time when soaps are desperately losing their luster. On Thursday’s episode of the NBC serial, Will (Chandler Massey) will lock lips with a stranger named Neil (Jesse Kristofferson) at a party.

'Raising Hope' scoop: California Gurl to guest star! -- EXCLUSIVE

Raising-Hope-Katy-Perry

The Fox comedy Raising Hope has found a cool way to make some noise in its new time slot on March 6: It’s bringing in Katy Perry!

EW has learned exclusively that Perry will appear in the episode as Rikki, a prison attendant who claims to be an old buddy of Sabrina’s (Shannon Woodward). Perry was a shoo-in for the job after creator Greg Garcia learned that she and Woodard were best buds in real life. READ FULL STORY »

Oscars exec producer: 'We need to go for comedy' -- EXCLUSIVE

OSCARS-MISCHER

In anticipation of Sunday’s Academy Awards telecast on ABC, EW talked to Executive Producer Don Mischer about host Billy Crystal, what went wrong with last year’s show, and how challenging it is to wrap the show in three hours.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Where’s the production at right now?
DON MISCHER: We’re now at the Kodak – we’ve been here since Monday. Things are loading in. We’ve begun to look at how the scenery looks. Things are going well, and Billy is busy really focusing on what he’s doing. He really tackled this job. I’ve worked with Billy for years, and it’s always been the way that he likes to operate. He meets with his writers for four and five hours, three to four nights a week. He’s been doing that since January. He’s really committing to it.

When did you work with Billy in the past?
I directed a show, it was a Saturday night variety show that was hosted by Howard Cosell. I think it was Billy’s first network television appearance. I remember he did a bit about taking home movies in the backyard, a guy who is barbecuing and all of that. It was just really wonderful, and people began to notice him immediately. That show didn’t last long, but of course he then went on to the other Saturday Night Live, and that started what has become a really wonderful career.

Five reasons why Maksim Chermkovskiy should stay on 'Dancing with the Stars'

It’s crossed the minds of every Dancing with the Stars fan, especially over the last two seasons: Is it time for Maksim Chermkovskiy to go?

He certainly didn’t endear himself to the judges last season when he made arrogant quips to Len Goodman about how the elder statesman should leave the ballroom — all while claiming that “this is my show, you know.” Even some fans turned on the hot-headed Ukrainian-American when he was filmed striking partner Hope Solo during a rehearsal. An exasperated Solo responded by saying, “would you stop being you?”

Chermkovskiy has also hinted in seasons past that maybe the time has come to search for greener pastures (or better partners), which has fueled speculation that maybe his days on the show are numbered. So what will happen come March 19? As is usually the case, the DWTS producers won’t reveal which pros will return for the 14th (!!) season until they announce the latest round of celebrities. (That happens Feb. 28 on Good Morning America.).  Since we can’t wait until then, we’ve decided to give five reasons why we’d like to see Maks stay for as long as the show lasts. And the reasons are…

Maksim-Chermkovskiy-tia

1. Because he’s (almost) an original member of the show. Viewers love continuity, and they get that from Chermkovskiy, who joined DWTS in season two as the pro assigned to Tia Carrere. They came in sixth place (but his long hair deserved a special prize of its own).

In preparation for the return of The Amazing Race this Sunday, host Phil Keoghan previews the 11 new teams and what makes this group so special. (Maybe it’s because they’re having to race through five continents, 22 cities, and nearly 40,000 miles, or what CBS refers to as “one of the most competitive courses ever?”) READ FULL STORY »

'One Tree Hill': Welcome back, Chad Michael Murray! -- PHOTO

Executive producer Mark Schwahn wanted Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) to return to One Tree Hill on Feb. 22 for the CW show’s last season, but the homecoming had to feel organic. Fortunately, the storyline presented a perfect opportunity: The husband of Lucas’ longtime buddy Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) is missing, So she’d naturally turn to Lucas for a little support. “It’s a nice little gift for fans who want to see him one last time,” Schwahn says.

'Big Bang' beats 'Idol' at 8 but Fox rules night

Everyone taking a winter vacay or something? Viewership has been oddly soft this week for broadcast TV: The Big Four were either down or flat versus last week, according to early results. Though American Idol helped Fox to win Thursday among adults 18-49 (5.0 rating/13 share) and viewers (16.5 million), the show was still down 14 percent in the demo versus last week.

Idol still dominated among adults 25-54 and teens.

CBS came in second for the night with a 3.3/9 in the demo and 13.3 million viewers. Big Bang Theory beat Idol in the first half-hour among 18-49 (5.0/15 versus 4.6/13) and viewers (15.5 million versus 15 million), but it was still down 11 percent from last week. Rob! earned a 3.2/9, down 3 percent from last week, and 10.9 million, followed by Person of Interest (2.9/7, down 12 percent from last week, and 13.2 million) and The Mentalist (2.8/7, down 7 percent from last week, and 13.6 million).

ABC was third in the demo with a 2.4/6, with Wipeout earning a 1.5/4, which tied its season low, and 5.1 million, followed by Grey’s Anatomy (3.1/8, down 23 percent, and 8.1 million) and Private Practice (2.6/7, up 8 percent from last week, and 7 million). NBC hobbled in fourth place, with 30 Rock earning a 1.4/4, down 13 percent from last week, and 3.6 million, followed by Parks and Recreation (1.7/5, flat, 3.5 million), The Office (2.2/6, down 12 percent to a series low, and 4.3 million),  and Up All Night (1.5/4, down 12 percent to a series low, 3 million). That was a repeat of Grimm.

Simon Cowell suggests Super Bowl for 'X Factor,' 'Idol,' and 'The Voice'

We’re not sure which would make a better television special: a supernova competition between winners of The X Factor, American Idol, and The Voice, or a cage match between über-producers Simon Cowell and Nigel Lythgoe.

On Thursday, the two men engaged in a brief Twitter exchange that suggests a friendly rivalry could make for great TV if it ever found its way into broadcast. First, this from X Factor’s Cowell: “Maybe the winner of @TheXFactorUSA this yr should compete with winner of The Voice & Idol in a super final. Just a thought. I’d be up for it.”

Lythgoe then replied via @dizzyfeet: “@simoncowell suggests the IDOL winner should take on the voice and x-factor winners. The problem is the Idol winner will be a star by then.” Oh, snap! READ FULL STORY »

Casting call: Who should play Hannibal for NBC?

Tags: ,
Hannibal-cacsting_320.jpg

Now that NBC has ordered 13 episodes of Hannibal, the next step is to find someone charismatic (and terrifying) enough to play the title role of the cannibal serial killer.

The true lead of the show will be whoever takes over the part of FBI agent Will Graham; it is, after all, an adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon, a prequel to Silence of the Lambs. But Dr. Hannibal Lecter will obviously generate the most attention (and inevitable scrutiny, if he’s not cast right). Short of considering just about every male actor who has played a baddo on a TV show, it’s likely the the network will focus on younger men — even though Anthony Hopkins reprised his role in the 2002 movie from Brett Ratner. (Ed Norton played Will Graham.) READ FULL STORY »

'House' star disputes claim he was tired of working

Hugh Laurie released a statement in response to a Telegraph report that suggested House was ending its run on Fox because he was tired of going to work. The network recently announced that the drama will sunset after eight years.

“Some newspapers, obviously dissatisfied by the statement we released last week, have suggested that ‘the truth’ — a modern journalistic shorthand for ‘not even remotely the truth but it’s creepy enough so let’s go with it’ — behind our joint decision was that I was sick of going to work,” according to Laurie’s statement released to TV Guide. “The evidence for this was a remark I made five years ago about a different subject. 'The Voice': Hey, that's Jordis from 'Rock Star'!

Tags:

Anyone who loved the short-lived CBS show Rock Star should have felt major déjà vu on Monday. That’s because Jordis Unga, one of the participants from the INXS season, showed up on stage.

It’s hard to blame Voice executive producer Mark Burnett for recycling singers from his old show. Rock Star unearthed some extraordinary talent, and it was a shame it never went the distance. (If only Van Halen would have agreed to find its new frontman on CBS.)

On Monday, Unga, 29, performed “Maybe I’m Amazed” and had everyone but Adam Levine (WTH?) turning around to greet her. Maybe she should have gone with “Man Who Sold the World” from Rock Star instead (which is also a favorite of Rock Star’s No. 1 fan, Dalton Ross). Check it out here: READ FULL STORY »
