Paramount to take Spike TV's 'Deadliest Warrior' to the big screen

Paramount Pictures and Shawn Levy’s (Night at the Museum) 21 Laps are partnering to turn Spike TV’s hit television show Deadliest Warrior, which just concluded its second season, into a feature film. The plot line for the movie remains under wraps, but the television show pits history’s greatest warriors against one another to determine who is the most powerful. Through a combination of CG technology, real-life fighters, historians, and weapons experts, the producers of the show were able to determine which warriors throughout history would have been the deadliest. Spike TV just renewed the series for its third season.

Levy and 21 Laps production president Dan Levine will produce with Levy contemplating directing the movie. Levy is currently shooting Real Steal with Hugh Jackman. The project marks the first collaboration between Paramount Pictures and its sister company Spike TV.

Exclusive: Steve Martin helps Oregon high school seeking to perform his play

Tags: , News

Steve Martin: comedian, actor, playwright, novelist, and…first amendment activist? The multi-hyphenate may have to add this title to his job description now that he’s helping Oregon-based La Grande High School perform Picasso at the Lapin Agile after its school board canceled the production due to parents’ concerns over the play’s content. Martin, who wrote Picasso back in 1993, sent a letter to the La Grande Observer‘s editor, which was published in its paper Friday, describing his intent with the play and offering a proposal to the school’s director and his cast. “I will finance a non-profit, off-the-high-school campus production (low-budget, I hope!)…so that individuals outside the jurisdiction of the school board but within the guarantees of freedom of expression provided by the Constitution of the United States, can determine whether they will or will not see the play, even if they are under 18.”

According to the Observer‘s article on the decision, the school board’s superintendent canceled the show after a parent filed a complaint accompanied by a petition signed by 137 community members. The parents objected to the play’s bar locale and its sexual references. The play depicts an imaginary meeting between Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein at the Lapin Agile bar in Montmartre, Paris. The comedy has been performed professionally all over the U.S. and in quite a few high schools and colleges, too. Said Martin in his letter, “I have heard that some in your community have characterized the play as ‘people drinking in bars, and treating women as sex objects.’ With apologies to William Shakespeare, this is like calling Hamlet a play about a castle.”

La Grande’s version of Picasso at the Lapin Agile will now be performed at the McKinsey Theater at Eastern Oregon University, May 16-18. Martin will not be able to attend. “His presence will be palpable even if he can’t come,” La Grande English teacher Kevin Cahill, the director of the play, tells EW. “We will leave a seat open to him in the middle of the front row.”

Spike Lee to film Broadway's 'Passing Strange' for TV

Tags: ,

Spike Lee is going to Broadway. The Oscar-nominated writer/director will be spending part of his July filming the Tony-winning production Passing Strange. Lee will film the musical by singer/songwriter Stew over the course of a weekend, shooting two shows with audiences and then a third one without. (He did a similar thing with his 2000 concert film The Original Kings of Comedy.) Passing Strange‘s producers are financing the production, and while no distribution deal has been set, sources believe it will air on cable television upon completion. The musical centers on a young black musician who sets off on a journey to find “the real” after being raised in a church-going middle-class Los Angeles neighborhood. It was originally developed at the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab.

Cera to host Saturday night, live at the UCB Theater

New SNL shows may be gone from your Saturday night TV line-up, but if you are a lucky resident of New York City you can see the crew perform live at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater this Saturday with Superbad star Michael Cera hosting. Seems that the SNL cast has decided to not let the writers’ strike dull their comic abilities and will improv different skits live. Cera, who is currently in New York filming Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist for Sony Pictures, was contacted directly by SNL and UCB member Amy Poehler to see if he was interested in joining in. He won’t be meeting with the cast until a few hours before the show, so his previous improv skills will definitely be tested.

'30 Rock' is the latest show to shut down

Friday's Strike Rally Biggest Yet

Tags: ,

Close to 4,000 people — the largest crowd since the strike began — gathered outside the Fox lot today as the writers’ strike entered its fifth day. The mood among striking writers was, um, upbeat. “Yippee kai pay motherf*****,” cheered Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, to rousing applause. “We are going to win this thing. They know they are in the wrong here. The logic would be
obvious to a child. A novelist receives royalties for his books. A
musician receives royalties for their songs. Screenwriters deserve fair
royalties for their work.”

Not only were some of television’s top showrunners on hand Lost‘s Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and Desperate Housewives‘ Marc Cherry — but a bunch of actors showed up as well, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Larry David, Tom Arnold, and Dennis Haysbert. Strikers carried picket signs, shouted
chants, shut down two major streets, and enjoyed refreshments provided by the
agencies. William Morris brought coffee and bagels, UTA handed out energy bars, and those show-offs at CAA provided agency-baked churros.

While rally entertainment was provided by Rage Against the
Machine’s Tom Morello, WGA
West President Patric Verrone was all business, introducing a series of speakers, including
Reverend Jesse Jackson, WGA negotiating
committee chair John Bowman, and
SAG president Alan Rosenberg. Meanwhile, one writer-director-producer summed up the strikers’ position well: “I don’t think
people really understand that the studios are asking the writers to
take a gigantic step backwards,” said Judd Apatow. “If you are going to watch your shows on
the Internet and it’s going to be hooked up to your TV, then writers
should get paid an amount equivalent to what they normally get.
Anything other than that is just a money grab.”

Reitman not 'Smoking' for USA

Tags:

USA Networks is planning a TV version of the indie film Thank You For Smoking, but without the film’s writer/director, Jason Reitman. Reitman is likely to have another hit this December with Fox Searchlight’s Juno, but according to a source close to the situation, Reitman was squeezed out of the Smoking party. Initially, Reitman, producer David Sacks, and others pitched the Smoking TV series to HBO. Sacks ,however, opted for a network deal and took the project to NBC. The show didn’t make it at NBC, but landed at USA Networks, a sister company to NBC. Along the way, Reitman dropped out. Was he pushed? Sacks says that Reitman had first right of refusal, and that Reitman passed. Reitman declined to comment.

Jason Reitman, meet Dwight Schrute

Tags:

Jason Reitman, director of last year’s Thank You For Smoking and this year’s sure-to-be critical darling Juno, is about to break into a group of elite filmmakers. The son of Ivan Reitman will join the ranks of J.J. Abrams, Harold Ramis, Miguel Arteta, and Joss Whedon when he takes a seat in the director’s chair of The Office. Reitman, who is friends with Rainn Wilson and John Krasinski, was given a script and a floor plan as part of his prep for the show. You see, since The Office‘s set is built to mimic a real workplace environment, Reitman will be forced to get really creative in maneuvering his two cameras to capture the episode (it’ll air later this season). The other challenge for directing this sitcom: There is no extra lighting. The only option is to remove a ceiling panel to let in more light. No worries though, Jason. If you’re up to directing Juno‘s Michael Cera in gold gym shorts you can handle anything.

The Firm's Kwatinetz dumps poor Brit Brit

So in one day the former pop sensation lost her kids and her manager. Fox News is reporting that temporary custody of her kids has been turned over to father-of-the-year Kevin Federline, and now, according to a source who used to work with Jeff Kwatinetz, the power broker at The Firm, the manager dropped Britney, one of his highest profile clients, because she was no longer listening to him and it was making him look bad. The only thing that trumps money in this biz is ego.

This is not the first time Kwatinetz has shocked the town by getting rid of a celeb client when the downward slide of their career had only just begun: Kwatinetz fired Michael Jackson in 2001 — and look what a brilliant decision that was.
