Jane Lynch talks hosting this year's Emmys: 'I'm quite calm about it'

Last week, it became official that Glee star Jane Lynch would host this year’s Emmy Awards, airing Sept. 18 on Fox. So how did the actress, who herself won an Emmy last year for playing Glee‘s Sue Sylvester, land such a high-profile gig? “I was on a plane after Upfronts and [producer] Mark Burnett was on the plane as well,” Lynch tells EW. “He came up to me and said, ‘I’m producing the Emmys and you’re my first choice.’ And I said, ‘Wow! Okay!’ [Laughs] Then I went on vacation with [wife] Lara — we went to Bora Bora. We got an email from Mark Burnett saying, ‘I’m officially asking you to be the host.’ And I said, ‘Yes!’”

Lynch says she’s taking pointers from last year’s host Jimmy Fallon. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee': Co-creator/exec producer Brad Falchuk discusses last night's finale and what's in store for season 3 -- EXCLUSIVE

SPOILER ALERT: IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED GLEE‘s SEASON 2 FINALE, WHICH AIRED LAST NIGHT, STOP READING……… By now, most of you Gleeks know that New Directions didn’t even place in the top ten at Nationals. On the bright side, Finnchel is back together, Quinn got a jaunty new haircut, Kurt and Blaine both said, “I love you,” and Sam and Mercedes are now a couple! “Samcedes?” “Mersam?” That’s gonna be a tough one to combine into a catchy nickname. EW talked exclusively with Glee co-creator/executive producer Brad Falchuk about the New York City-set finale as well as what’s in store for season 3.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you always think New Directions would lose?
BRAD FALCHUK: Yeah. They’re not ready yet. I think there’s something about them winning that deflates things oddly. We knew what was going to happen. It’s not even that they lost but they didn’t even make that top 10. That’s how unprepared they were. That’s how unfocused they were. I kinda liked that. To me, if they make it to the top 10 after they’re so clearly not focused, they’re clearly not invested because they all have other things going on — it would have been a little disingenuous.

Why are Sam and Mercedes hiding their relationship?
We’re gonna have to wait and discover that. They have their reasons. That was something that was born out of the prom episode. We felt the chemistry there. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' scoop: Behind-the-scenes of the New York City season finale

We’re two weeks away from the season 2 finale of Glee, but EW is ready to reveal some scoop on May 24′s episode. Glee fans will be thrilled by what the producers have in store for this epic ender, in which New Directions travel to the Big Apple to compete in nationals. Over the course of a whirlwind week of filming in April, the cast and crew shot at various New York landmarks, including Times Square, Lincoln Center, and Central Park. Many of these locations will be seen in a major musical number that finds the cast singing a mash-up of Madonna’s “I Love New York” and Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” Co-creator/exec producer Brad Falchuk, who also directed the episode, says that filming in Manhattan allowed for some expansive shots of the city. “We’re [normally] either shooting inside a soundstage or we’re shooting in Los Angeles, pretending it’s Ohio,” he says. “That means it has to get very small. You can’t get too wide because you might catch a palm tree. So being in New York was like, ‘Hey, man — go big and go wide!’”

So what else can fans expect? READ FULL STORY »

'Jersey Shore': Filming in Florence delayed due to Italian president's visit

MTV has confirmed that production of Jersey Shore‘s fourth season, set to shoot in Florence, Italy, has been postponed, partly due to a visit from the country’s president, Giorgio Napolitano. The network said in a statement, “Production on Jersey Shore will begin this week, following the Italian presidential visit to Florence.  In the ongoing spirit of cooperation, we’re waiting until his official visit concludes to start filming.” EW has learned that the presidential visit would have hindered production in terms of which locations the cast would be able to visit, hence the brief delay.

GLAAD asks Fox channel in Houston for apology after 'extremist' report on gay characters on 'Glee'

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has asked a Fox affiliate in Houston for a formal apology after their news broadcast aired a segment criticizing Glee‘s portrayal of gay teens. Last week, Glee aired a special 90-minute episode inspired by Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and devoted to teaching the series’ characters to celebrate what makes them unique. After the broadcast, Houston Fox affiliate KRIV-26 aired a segment called “Is TV Too Gay?” which focused on whether or not shows like Glee “delve too much into homosexual relationships.” One of the panelists, Bryan Fischer from the American Family Association, reprimanded Glee for portraying homosexuality which, in his words, “is conduct that bears enormous psychological and physical risk to those that engage in it.” GLAAD says that the channel has yet to issue a formal apology, and claims KRIV-26 initially seemed remorseful about the segment but now stands behind it.

The cast of Glee are currently shooting the season finale in New York City and hitting various Big Apple landmarks like Tiffany’s and Times Square. So it’s natural for them to run into one of New York (and Broadway’s) biggest icons: Patti LuPone. While early reports have LuPone acting opposite Lea Michele and Chris Colfer, EW has learned it’s actually Michele (Rachel) and Cory Monteith (Finn) who share the screen with the fabulous LuPone. Fingers crossed for a sing-off between diva one (Michele) and diva two (LuPone).

'Glee' star Chris Colfer discusses his new pilot for Disney and Kurt's return to McKinley -- EXCLUSIVE

It’s the actor’s second script deal; Colfer’s set to star in his own screenplay, the teen comedy Struck by Lightning, this summer once the Glee concert tour wraps. Did we mention that Colfer is only 20 years-old? In between a break on the set of Glee, EW talked to Colfer about his Disney pilot and what’s in store for Kurt and Blaine.  READ FULL STORY »

'Gossip Girl' scoop: Meet Serena's cousin, Charlie

Giovanni Rufino/The CW

Tonight, Gossip Girl finally returns from its winter hiatus and will finish out the season with five new episodes full of bitchery and bling. Debuting this week is Serena’s cousin, Charlie, played by Kaylee DeFer (The War at Home). Charlie, who’s real name is Charlotte, is the daughter of Lily’s estranged sister Carol, played in season two’s GG flashback episode by Krysten Ritter but now in the present by Sheila Kelley. So where have these two ladies been throughout the past four seasons? “They’ve been in Florida,” says executive producer Stephanie Savage. “As you may recall from the pilot, Lily’s original lie was that Eric was with Aunt Carol in Miami.”

But things have not been so sunny in Florida for Charlie and her mom. “Basically, I’m pretty lonely and my mom has told me the van der Woodsens are these horrible people,” says DeFer, who will appear in the remainder of GG‘s episodes and possibly return next season. “I’ve been told my whole life that my family is awful. I decide I’d like to meet them.” READ FULL STORY »

'The Killing': Exec producer Veena Sud spills secrets on TV's new hit mystery

Carole Segal/AMC

AMC has already found success in taking viewers inside the unique worlds of a 1960s advertising agency (Mad Men), a dying crystal-meth cooker (Breaking Bad), and a group of survivors battling zombies (The Walking Dead). Now the cable channel has delved into the murder-mystery genre with The Killing (airing Sundays at 10 p.m. ET, 9 p.m. CT), which follows the twisty and grim murder investigation of 17-year-old Seattle teen Rosie Larsen. Exec producer Veena Sud had just finished five seasons writing for the CBS’ procedural Cold Case but was instantly drawn to this adaptation of the Danish series Forbrydelsen. “I heard that phrase The Killing and I said ‘I’m in,’” says Sud. “I love how dark and raw that title is, and ditto on the material. It was wonderfully addictive, great storytelling and an awesome female lead.” The same could be said for the American version, which logged AMC’s second-highest premiere ratings ever. EW talked to Sud about The Killing’s central mystery, comparisons to Twin Peaks, and what season 2 would look like. READ FULL STORY »
