A day after making a historic move in declaring his support for same-sex marriage, President Barack Obama has booked an exclusive interview with The View. POTUS will sit down with Barbara Walters and the rest of the panel next Monday as part of the show’s “Red, White & View” campaign. The interview will air the next day, May 15. It’s Obama’s fourth time on the show (and second appearance as President). “We promise to let him get a word in edgewise,” joked Walters.

Fox's new TV series titles: Too 'messy'?

Tags: News

Fox ordered four new series last night, but its the show’s titles that had some viewers buzzing.

Mindy Kaling’s comedy about a “Bridget Jones-type” single woman has been officially untitled for months, though some reports have used the title Mindy. Unless you’re Seinfeld, it’s tough to pull off the vanity sitcom title, so trying something else is a good idea. Here’s Fox’s choice: It’s Messy.

It’s sort of like Denise Richards: It’s Complicated, but suggests clothes on the floor and possible spills. Plus, Kaling plays an OB-GYN on the show so … yeah. “Not digging the title of Mindy Kaling’s pilot,” Tweeted @tbrick2, “Sounds like a Sarah Jessica Parker rom-com.” READ FULL STORY »

TBS has rescued Cougar Town!

The cable network has ordered a fourth season of the comedy to begin airing in early 2013. In addition, TBS has purchased the rights to Cougar Town‘s first three seasons of 61 episodes that originally aired on ABC. “Cougar Town is a smart, whimsical sitcom that draws its humor from likable, relatable characters” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS. “We are thrilled to have Cougar Town moving to the TBS neighborhood as the network continues to expand its slate of original comedy series.”

On ABC this season, Cougar Town averaged 5.3 million viewers and a 1.9 rating in the adult demo, nosediving after it was moved to Tuesday nights and away from its previous Modern Family lead-in. With the axe hanging over the show, TBS stepped in and rescued Courteney Cox and Co. from cancellation.

Fire at 'Vampire Diaries' location won't affect show

A lot of drama has gone down on The Vampire Diaries at the Mystic Grill, but the real-life fire this morning at the location used for the restaurant’s facade won’t impact the show. Capt. Tony Smith, assistant fire marshal in Covington, Ga., confirms to EW that a call was received at 6:40 a.m. reporting a down power line and a possible transformer on fire. When firemen got to the location, they noticed heavy smoke coming out of the building at 116 Clark St., which houses CPA and law offices, and more units were dispatched. No injuries were reported. Significant fire damage was found in the CPA side of the building and the second story, Smith says. Exterior structural damage is very minimal. “The front door had to be replaced,” Smith says. “I don’t think it would interrupt any filming they had in the near future.”

The interior of the Mystic Grill is actually a set on the show’s stages in Decatur, Ga.

The Vampire Diaries airs its season 3 finale tonight on The CW. The cast is now on hiatus. The show received an early renewal.

DirecTV has become the latest entertainment outlet to offer original scripted programming, announcing today that it has ordered 10 episodes of its first-ever original series Rogue, starring Thandie Newton (Crash).

According to a press release, the suspense-drama “revolves around a morally and emotionally conflicted cop, Grace (Newton), who is tormented by the possibility that her own actions contributed to her son’s death. Grace’s search for the truth is further complicated by her forbidden relationship with the crime boss who may have played a hand in the crime.” The series, created by Matthew Parkhill and exec produced by Nick Hamm, Steven Marrs, John Morayniss and Michael Rosenberg, will debut in summer 2013.

DirecTV’s first foray into original programming is just one in a recent trend of non-traditional media companies commissioning original content. Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu are diving into first-run scripted content, as are E! and Yahoo!.

'Secret Circle' EP Andrew Miller previews tonight's season finale

secret-circle

Tonight, The Secret Circle closes its first season with a finale that exec producer Andrew Miller promises will answer our questions about John Blackwell (Joe Lando). When we last left the teen witches of Chance Harbor, Cassie (Britt Robertson) and Diana (Shelley Hennig) had learned that Blackwell had orchestrated the creation of their entire Circle, even if he only fathered them, and Diana found out that Charles (Gale Harold), the father who raised her, had killed Cassie’s mother. Oh, and Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) was kidnapped by Eben (Sammi Rotibi), and Blackwell got his hands on the final crystal needed to make the Crystal Skull, which he insists is the only way the Circle can defeat the Witch Hunters. “There is an extremely diabolical next phase to Blackwell’s plans that the kids aren’t privy to, that Faye’s kidnapping has something to do with,” Miller teases. By the end of the hour, we will know Blackwell’s true intentions. “He’s a complicated guy, to say the least. But we’ll completely understand why he’s in Chance Harbor and what he wants, and the viewers can decide just how evil or not evil they think he is,” Miller says. “And Cassie will make that decision very clearly.” There’s a reason the episode is titled “Family”: “For all the characters, but particularly for Cassie and Diana, it becomes a choice about defining whether your family is made up of blood or choice. That’s the decision Diana will have to make, that Cassie will have to make, and the others will have to make as they head to the final minutes of the show.” READ FULL STORY »

'Vampire Diaries' season finale preview: Nina Dobrev on her tears, Elena's choice, and fan's reactions

If you think you’re going to get Nina Dobrev to tell you who Elena chooses — Stefan (Paul Wesley) or Damon (Ian Somerhalder) — in tonight’s season finale of The Vampire Diaries, think again: She hasn’t even told her mother. “She lives between Canada and Europe, so I don’t get to see my mom very much. Her way to kind of be with me is watching the show and Googling me wherever I am,” Dobrev says, with a laugh. “So on many occasions, she calls and asks for spoilers and I’ll always say, ‘Nope! Nope! I’m not telling you anything.’ She always gets a little bit upset at the time, but then ultimately, she’s happy that I didn’t ruin it for her. It’s like the way I don’t want to know what happens in an episode before I read it. You don’t want to get to the punch line before you hear the joke.” READ FULL STORY »

Fox renews 'Touch,' cancels 'Alcatraz,' 'Finder'

Alcatraz

Fox is set to renew freshman drama Touch for a second season, but has cancelled the J.J. Abrams series Alcatraz and Bones spin-off The Finder.

Touch is getting another chance to shine for the network, despite relatively modest ratings for the show’s debut season. The show is produced by Fox’s sister studio 20th Century Fox TV and the network has a long and strong relationship with star Kiefer Sutherland from his days on 24. Fox and 20th sources say the renewal deal isn’t yet finalized, but both expect it will be completed soon.

Both the Touch renewal and the Alcatraz and Finder cancellation were largely expected. It’s unlikely, I’m told, that Alcatraz will be shopped elsewhere.

Vampire Diaries writer-producer Kevin Williamson’s dark Fox drama is a go for next season. The serial killer thriller — once titled Mastermind, now titled The Following — has two strong male lead actors on board with Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy.

The show is described as “an edge-of-your-seat thriller about the complex relationship between a diabolical serial killer (Purefoy) and the damaged FBI agent (Bacon) who took him down. After the killer escaped, the agent is reactivated and discovers that he is no longer just hunting one man, but a massive cult of serial killers created and manipulated during his time in prison.” We’re hearing Fox has ordered 15 episodes instead of the usual 13, but that has not yet been confirmed.
