UPDATED: Mindy Kaling has found a new job. A comedy from The Office co-star has received a series order from Fox, along with two other projects.

Kaling’s series, now titled It’s Messy, is about a “young Bridget Jones-type doctor who tries to navigate both her personal and professional lives.” Chris Messina and Ed Weeks co-star. This is the pilot that was developed over at NBC’s studio, but the Peacock passed on the project and Fox snatched it up. The network is rumored to be considering Mindy as a companion for New Girl.

“I love you, Kevin Reilly,” Kaling just tweeted, referring to Fox’s entertainment president.

'Vampire Diaries' season finale preview: Kat Graham on Bonnie's deal and possible dark side

VAMPIRE-DIARIES

It may be difficult to believe, but Thursday’s Vampire Diaries season finale isn’t just about Elena (Nina Dobrev) making a decision, finally, between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder). As EP Julie Plec says, “There’s definitely some murder and mayhem, and if all goes well, there will be some epic tears, too.” As a result of Alaric outing them to the Council in last week’s episode, Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) will learn there’s a target on their backs and have to decide whether they stay and fight, or leave Mystic Falls. And Bonnie (Kat Graham), who was used by Esther to complete Alaric’s transformation into the ultimate killer and often finds herself doing magic to aid vampires (good or bad), is tired of being pushed around. “She is done taking orders from anybody else, and she’s making decisions based on what it is that she wants, what’s right for her and the people that she loves,” Plec says. Adds Graham, ”That’s definitely the overall tone of Bonnie in the season finale. She has got to make decisions for herself versus constantly bending over backwards for whoever might need her.” READ FULL STORY »

'Law & Order: SVU' renewed for 14th season

Tags: News

As expected, Law & Order: SVU is getting another round on NBC.

Despite ratings declines this season, NBC is bringing back the Dick Wolf drama, as well as picking up a second series from the veteran producer — Chicago Fire. SVU will return for a 14th season on the network.

But sorry, Christopher Meloni fans: The veteran actor who left the show after the 12th season is not expecting to reprise his role as Det. Elliott Stabler when it returns next fall. Meloni had been on the drama since the beginning, when it launched in 1999. “My whole life on SVU was awesome. I’m appreciative of everyone on the show,” he told EW. “There was nothing wrong with that show, or nothing wrong with those people. There was just something in my heart that was unhappy. I made myself happy again.”

Instead, Meloni will play an ancient and powerful vampire named Roman in the new season of True Blood that bows June 10.

As for the other Wolf drama debuting next fall, Chicago Fire is described as an “action-driven drama exploring the complex and heroic men and women of the Windy City’s Fire Department.” OK, so that doesn’t tell you very much. It stars Teri Reeves, David Eigenberg, Charlie Barnett, Lauren German, Monica Raymund, Taylor Kinney, Jesse Spencer, Eamonn Walker and Merle Dandridge. It’s a fire-fighting drama, what more do you need to know?

And there they go: Several shows aired their season finales Tuesday night, including NBC’s The Voice, Fox’s New Girl and CBS’ Unforgettable.

The Voice two-hour live finale (11.6 million viewers, 4.3 adults 18-49 rating) was up 39 percent this week. Plus, reversing its recent year-to-year trend, the singing competition was up 16 percent compared to its first season finale. Lead-in was provided by a special Fashion Star (4.4 million, 1.3).

CBS had NCIS (17.8 million, 3.0), NCIS: LA (14.5 million, 3.0) and the finale of Unfortgettable (10.7 million, 2.0). Unforgettable has been very much on the bubble for a renewal and was up 11 percent despite increased competition from NBC. READ FULL STORY »

'Revenge' boss teases tonight's origins episode: 'It's a love letter to fans'

REVENGE

Tonight’s new episode of ABC’s soapy indulgence Revenge is titled “Legacy” for a good reason — it delves into the history of lead character Emily (Emily Van Camp) as it relates to the folks she’s currently trying to take down in the Hamptons. The official logline from ABC describes tonight’s episode as “the genesis of Amanda’s ultimate plan to bring justice from her father.” But we’ll let series creator and executive producer Mike Kelley explain: “It’s sort of one from the archives, one from the Revenge archives,” he says. “I wouldn’t call it a flashback episode, as much as an archival episode. It’s a bit of a love letter to fans.”

'DWTS' eliminated contestant: 'Every day above ground is a good day'

MELISSA-GILBERT_320.jpg

Some birthday present for Melissa Gilbert!

But the former star of Little House on the Prairie chose not to feel sorry for herself after Tuesday’s installment of Dancing with the Stars, when she became the latest celebrity to leave the dance floor. (And on her birthday, to boot!) “Every day above ground is a good day. So I am okay,” she told reporters afterwards. “I did things that I thought I could never do in my life, so we are definitely going out on a high note and last night was unbelievable.”

“I’m very proud,” added her partner Maksim Chermkovskiy. “ We set a goal that we’d be here till week four. We didn’t want to go during the dance duels and that’s exactly what happened. We are very proud, and while the competitor in me will never be okay with a loss, the dancer in me did not want to see Katherine go home. There are five amazing couples left, and they were amazing since day one, and have proven with the scores that they are amazing and it would’ve sucked to see Katherine get eliminated on a mistake. So she has another chance and hopefully they will use it well.”

For anyone keeping track at home, Gilbert dropped two dress sizes during the show’s run. She’s now a 2 and has a 26-inch waist (commence gasps!). She’s also breathing a lot easier during workouts. ”I learned a lot about my physical endurance and had never worked this hard, to the point where in the beginning, I would be wheezing in rehearsals,” the actress recalled. “And I don’t even have asthma, and it was extraordinary, it actually hurt to breathe. Now I look at the dances and the critiques we were getting from the judges in the beginning and I’d be huffing and puffing and he would be perfectly still, now we catch a breath at the same time. That’s amazing.”

“Okay honey,” Chermovskiy interjected. “I don’t know about the same time.”

“Well close,” Gilbert replied. “I am 16 years older than you.”

Her lippy partner then admitted that he didn’t pick up much about Gilbert’s previous life when tripping the light fantastic. “I still don’t know what house on the prairie is. I’ve heard a lot about it, over and over and I’m like okay I get it  – It’s the 1800s and somebody lives somewhere,” he admitted. “But I don’t really care about the half pint, I care about Melissa Gilbert and that’s the person I got to know and the person I got to love. It’s a tough show but there’s always something positive when you come out of it, and I try to get a lot of positive out of it. Clearly I have never won and I’m not going to lie to you, today it didn’t feel like a fan vote, it felt like some other vote, but it is what it is and I have been here before.”

As for Chermkovskiy’s future on the show, he only had this to say: “That’s the million-dollar question. Again, first of all once again it’s not up to us. We get asked back,  but it will come down to what I need for me and I think for me, I have made enough friends so… I would’ve been upset if I didn’t come back this season, I would’ve missed out on Melissa. So I will think about it.”

He then took a swipe at DWTS editing when someone asked if Gilbert understood him more than any of his other partners. “I think that what you guys don’t get the chance to really understand and see what really happens and therefore you pass judgment on, and rightfully so, based on the limited information that you get from rehearsal footage and after the show,” he said. “I actually thought about it today, we really don’t get to speak or say anything. We get to be montaged and that kind of sucks, Val and I are not one line type of people, my thoughts are complicated paragraphs and they run in sentences, I didn’t know how to give you a short soundbite, so I don’t know, I wish something could be done about this but again it’s not my show.” — With reporting from Steve Gidlow

'Once Upon A Time' producers talk last week's killer episode, tease 'game-changing' season finale

once-upon-a-time_320.jpg

Did you audibly gasp during this week’s episode of Once Upon A Time? Whether it was the citizens of Storybrooke exacting revenge on Regina (alas, it was but a nightmare) or Henry feasting on the most unfortunate baked good ever made, The penultimate episode of Once Upon a Time was full of shocking moments, but also a whole set of new questions that may or may not be answered in the finale: Will Henry survive his snack? Will Emma believe? Will Regina make good on her promise to Jefferson? Why does Mr. Gold want to break the curse? Which Avenger would Granny be? (Obviously, the Hulk.)

Exec producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have a few answers, although they don’t want to spoil any of next week’s major reveals (but maybe you can wring that out of them during their live Facebook chat tomorrow at 3 p.m. EST). For now, see what the imaginative duo has to say about the old faces and new surprises in store for Sunday’s season finale. READ FULL STORY »

'Gossip Girl,' '2 Broke Girls' fall to ratings lows

Gossip Girl wasn’t on The CW’s recent list of early (read: easy decision) renewals, but most insiders think the show will get a final season order (perhaps announced on the day of the network’s upfront next week? Just like the One Tree Hill final season pickup last year…).

Monday night’s episode didn’t help the show’s chances, but at this point the show’s outcome is unlikely to change anyway: Gossip Girl (869,000 viewers, 0.4 adult demo rating) fell 50 percent this week to an all-time low. Hart of Dixie (1.3 million, 0.6), however, made its expected renewal decision easier. Though the show dipped slightly from last week, it still rose mightily from its Gossip lead-in. NBC orders White House comedy from former Obama speechwriter

Tags: News

NBC is going to the White House for laughs this fall.

The broadcaster has given the family sitcom pilot 1600 Penn a series order for 13 episodes. The project is created by Book of Mormon star Josh Gad, former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett and Modern Family director Jason Winer.

Bill Pullman (Independence Day) stars as the POTUS (again!) and Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg) is the First Lady and stepmother to the president’s children. Gad also co-stars as the president’s out-of-control oldest son.

NBC’s new comedy might benefit from the increased interest in politics thanks to the presidential election. The network had years of success with its White House-set drama The West Wing. READ FULL STORY »
