The CW's hot pilots rundown: 'Selection,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' more

Filed under: Scoop and tagged:

The CW’s dry spell might be over. Lacking a big breakout hit since 2009′s Vampire Diaries, the network boasts a pilot roster this season filled with head-turning ideas from top producers like J.J. Abrams and Greg Berlanti. “The overall quality is as high or higher than we ever had,” said CW’s development head Thom Sherman. “Everybody is really jazzed.”

The first full CW slate developed under the network’s new entertainment chief Mark Pedowitz, the lineup aimed for broad-appeal, promotion-friendly concepts while still sticking within the network’s adults 18-34 demographic. Noted Sherman: “When people came in to pitch ideas we asked them, ‘What’s the billboard?’”

Below, Sherman offers some tantalizing new details about each of the projects. There’s a Sex and the City prequel on Carrie Bradshaw’s high school years, a grounded adaptation of the DC Comics hero Green Arrow, a future-set fantasy that’s “The Hunger Games meets The Bachelor,” and even a time-traveling musical. 'Carrie Diaries' scoop: Bradshaw's first love isn't a boy...

Carrie Bradshaw’s first love isn’t a boy…

The CW’s Sex and the City prequel pilot The Carrie Diaries stars a young Carrie Bradshaw coming of age in the 1980s. When the project was first announced, some readers wondered how it would distinguish itself from Carrie Diaries executive producers’ Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s other CW soap Gossip Girl (romantic prime-time soap, New York City setting, voiceover narration…). CW’s development head Thom Sherman ran down the ways that Carrie Diaries will feel unique from the network’s previous shows.

“The focus is so much on the Carrie Bradshaw’s character and who she was at 16, 17 years old,” Sherman tells EW.com. “We weirdly compare it to Smallville because it’s an origin story — how she started writing, how she came to love Manhattan. Basically how we frame the show is: ‘Carrie at 16 found her first love and it’s not a boy — it’s Man-hattan.’ The other unique aspect is obviously the time period.” READ FULL STORY »

The CW’s Arrow is going to be pretty different from the Green Arrow character on the network’s recently retired hit Smallville. Think Bourne Identity with lots of arrows.

Fans of the DC Comics archer figured they were in for a change the moment the project was announced. The producers include Greg Berlanti (Everwood), Marc Guggenheim (FlashForward), and Andrew Kreisberg (Vampire Diaries, Fringe). Then the formidable-looking Stephen Amell was cast, taking over the role from Smallville‘s Justin Hartley.

CW’s development head Thom Sherman tells EW.com there will be several other differences as well. READ FULL STORY »

On NBC’s Parks and Recreation, Nick Offerman plays a hands-off boss, but he’ll be playing a different kind of man in charge later this year. It may not even be spring yet, but Offerman already has recorded a guest spot for the Christmas episode of The Cleveland Show, voicing a sexist, philandering department-store owner who requires the female elves (including Roberta) to don hot pants to attract customers. “He’s very handsome and gassy,” Offerman tells EW. 'American Horror Story' season 2 scoop: Ryan Murphy teases which actors will return and where it will be set

Last night, Ryan Murphy appeared on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with host Andy Cohen and dished out some scoop on American Horror Story‘s second season. First, during a round of Cohen’s nightly game “Plead the Fifth,” Murphy revealed that Golden Globe and SAG Award winner Jessica Lange will make an appearance during AHS season 2 (A rep for the show’s studio, 20th Century Fox, tells EW that there’s no official deal yet with Lange). Then, during the web-only after show, Murphy teased a few more details…

  • AHS season 2 will take place on the East Coast and will involve a “horror institution.”
  • Murphy is in talks with four of the previous AHS castmembers but none of them were the Harmons—not surprising since the entire family perished by the end of season 1. By our deduction, that means potential returnees could include Lange, Denis O’Hare, Evan Peters, and Frances Conroy.

EW readers should remember that Murphy told me exclusively last December that the secret to the second season was hidden in the penultimate “Birth” episode. It’s time to go back and watch that hour again, AHS fans! Post your theories below!

Syfy’s hit competition series Face Off is getting a third round.

Face Off will return for a 10-episode season, showcasing a new group of rising special effects make-up artists competing for the chance to showcase their imagination and creativity (and collect 100k). This week’s episode features appearances by Vivica A. Fox (Independence Day) and Being Human’s Sam Huntington.

Syfy is also set to announce LeVar Burton (Star Trek: TNG) as a guest judge for the episode airing Feb. 22, when the contestants will design aliens based on the work of series judge Patrick Tatopoulos.

Season 2 currently airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. where last month’s premiere generated the show’s biggest number yet — 2.5 million viewers. The first two episodes are averaging 51 percent higher than the first season, so clearly a pickup was fully earned. If you want to apply to be a contestant for season 3, go here. The third season will debut this summer.

'Once Upon a Time' scoop: 'Alice in Wonderland' episode planned with Roger Daltrey -- EXCLUSIVE

Filed under: Scoop and tagged: ,

Here’s a tri-level scoop for Once Upon a Time fans, with each layer more intriguing then the last. Ready to go down the rabbit hole?

A talking caterpillar is coming to the show…

The talking caterpillar is going to be just one part of an Alice in Wonderland-themed episode. The title is “Hat Trick.” (You got that right? The Mad Hatter, of course… )

The talking caterpillar will be played by the Who’s rock legend Roger Daltrey in voice over. Once Upon executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz say the Who’s 1975 rock opera Tommy was “a huge inspiration for the show.”

The Alice in Wonderland episode will likely air in March. Sounds like this is one you don’t want to be late for. READ FULL STORY »

Fox explains 'X Factor' shake-up, defends 'Idol' ratings -- EXCLUSIVE

The changes to Fox’s singing competition shows have only just begun.

After weeks of dramatic headlines about American Idol‘s slipping ratings and The X Factor‘s talent departures, Fox’s president of alternative entertainment Mike Darnell spoke to EW about the challenges faced by Idol and Factor — and his strategy for remaining on top. Given their large number of hours and consistent ability to win time periods, one could argue that Idol and Factor are the No. 1 network’s most important shows. So what does it mean when the bulk of the Factor cast abruptly gets pink-slipped and Idol has CBS’ Big Bang Theory nipping at its heels on Thursday nights?

With Factor, the sudden exodus of host Steve Jones, judge Nicole ‪Scherzinger‬ and executive producer Simon Cowell’s longtime TV-spouse Paula Abdul may have stunned observers (L.A. Reid will return). Yet the move was somewhat less surprising to followers of the U.K. version, which sheds judges every few seasons. In a genre where tough-love auditions are the heart of the format, Darnell described being a star on Factor‘s debut as not entirely dissimilar to being a contestant.

“Season 1 was basically an audition act,” said Darnell late last week. “Simon got one big new star out of it — L.A. Reid, and that was great casting. There’s going to be a natural reassessment.” READ FULL STORY »

The series premiere of NBC’s Smash was, in one completely uncreative word, smashing, helped, of course, by the opener’s intense, nail-biting conclusion.

In the final minutes of the hour, the two actresses vying for the role of Marilyn (Katharine McPhee’s Karen and Megan Hilty’s Ivy) were left belting out their numbers, while the audience wondered, as the screen faded to black, which one would walk away with the role. Luckily, executive producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan were nice enough to give EW a few teases on the season to come. [Warning: Do not click on if you haven't seen the series premiere of Smash.] READ FULL STORY »

Bobby Cannavale has joined the cast of season 3 of of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

The veteran Emmy-winning TV actor (Cold Case, Nurse Jackie) will play Gyp Rosetti, a charming but ruthless gangster who challenges Nucky (Steve Buscemi) for control of the bootleg business.

Creator Terence Winter plans to have season 3 leap forward 16 months to 1923. “It was an exciting year,” he told EW.com. “All the people who stockpiled liquor started to run out, so competition between bootleggers became really fierce.”
