'30 Rock' scoop: Elizabeth Banks channels Sean Hannity, romances Alec Baldwin

Tags: , News

Even some of Hollywood’s most in-demand actresses have to occasionally beg for work. Take Elizabeth Banks. The star of 40-year-old Virgin, W., and Zack and Miri Make a Porno tells me that her upcoming 30 Rock gig resulted from her reaching out to the Emmy-winning comedy and not the other way around. “I definitely put feelers out, like, ‘I would love to be on your show,’” she confesses. “And they did it. They made it happen! I’m a huge fan, so this is a dream come true.”

Just in time: My best in show in '09!

I find myself getting crazy reflective as the year draws to a close. Maybe because I’m just that deep. Or maybe just because there is less new stuff to write about this time of year, so I need to fill this column with something. So today, I offer you my picks for the best of the best of the last 12 months. (FYI: I tried to limit the acting categories to one winner and one runner-up, but in some cases ties were simply unavoidable.) READ FULL STORY »

Thursday ratings: 'CSI,' 'The Mentalist' dominate, NBC comedies improve

A night of repeats on ABC meant a night of upticks everywhere else: NBC’s comedies posted their best numbers of the season, as did CSI and The Mentalist. Bones held on against a big night for Survivor, but Fringe continued to struggle — it was the only first-run show whose audience shrank from last week.

'Christmas In Rockefeller Center' to proceed 'without incident' despite strike threat

Tags:

Despite reports earlier today that NBC’s “Christmas In Rockefeller Center” broadcast may not air as scheduled on Wednesday night due to a labor dispute, an insider tells EW.com that the show will go on. Earlier today, the union representing 3000 producers, technicians, and writers employed by NBC threatened to strike the event over “stalled negotiations” for a new contract. The previous agreement expired last March. NBC responded with a statement criticizing the union for canceling recent meetings to continue discussions. Yet despite the press-release salvos, an insider says the event will take place “without incident.” This year’s Rockefeller Center festivities in New York–which, as always, is highlighted by the lighting of a towering Christmas tree–will be hosted by Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) and Zachary Levi (Chuck).

Rankings were steady last night with ratings drops pretty evenly across the board; The Office continued to top Fox’s drama Fringe, which lost around 40 percent of its lead-in from the going-strong Bones. The Vampire Diaries posted its lowest ratings ever, dropping to below 4 million for the first time.

Thursday ratings: 'Bones' bests 'FlashForward'

Survivor ruled the 8 o’clock hour, but Bones pulled off a decisive win against FlashForward this week, topping the freshman drama by over 1 million viewers and winning in the 18-49 demographic as Forward dropped to its lowest ratings yet. CBS’s cross-over sweeps stunt worked for CSI, which posted its best numbers of the season; the 9:00 slot still proved tough for Fringe, which is losing much of its lead-in. NBC comedies were relatively stable, as was the 10:00 hour.

FF edged out its Fox competitor averaged over the hour, but Bones picked up viewers in its second half while FlashForward lost them. Rankings were relatively stable otherwise, with slight dips for NBC comedies except Community, and Vampire Diaries proved its lasting power with another strong showing.

James-Franco-30-Rock_lReady for the latest twist in the incredibly wild and unpredictable career of one James Franco? Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Spider-Man/Milk actor will follow up his upcoming arc on General Hospital with a guest appearance on 30 Rock.

NBC declined to comment, but a Rock-solid insider tells me that Franco (playing himself) will be involved in a faux romance with Jane Krakowski’s Jenna — a relationship engineered by their respective agents. Sound familiar? READ FULL STORY »
