'Cult' pulled from CW schedule

Cult just hasn’t had the following they expected, so it’s being pulled from the CW schedule, EW confirms.

The show — starring Vampire Diaries actor Matt David and Supernatural‘s Alona Tal — has most recently aired on Fridays, but it’s next scheduled airing has been pulled to make room for an encore of the Carrie Diaries finale. Subsequent scheduled airings are being replaced by encores of Oh Sit, the network’s musical chairs competition show. (Ouch.)

No one can blame the CW, though. From the starting line, Cult failed to garner buzz. After starting its run on Tuesdays, the show was bumped to Fridays after just two episodes, where it tanked in ratings.

Cult had been set for a 13-episode freshman season, but only seven episodes have aired.

'Cult' preview: Stars talk about CW's dark new series

With shows like The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, the CW is home to hoards of rabid fanbases, but the network’s latest dark drama, Cult, delves into the world of extreme fandoms.

On the show, Matt Davis (The Vampire Diaries) plays journalist Jeff Sefton, a man whose search for his missing brother launches him into the world of a TV series called Cult (meta!). And as Jeff dives deeper into the show’s following — with help from the show’s production assistant Skye (Jessica Lucas) — he begins to uncover a possibly murderous cult modeled after the one on the show-within-the-show.

Robert Knepper (Prison Break) plays Roger Reeves, a man who portrays a nefarious cult leader character Billy Grimm on the fictional television series and Alona Tal (Supernatural) plays actress Marti Gerritsen, who is Reeves’s co-star.

Late last year, EW stopped by the set on a cold Vancouver night to chat with Knepper, Tal and Davis about the show, which premieres tonight.

CW's 'Cult': First look at creepy poster -- EXCLUSIVE

Wait! There’s another show about a cult of evil followers coming to broadcast TV, not just the one on Fox with that guy from Tremors. And this one has been in the works for years.

The CW’s Cult follows Jeff (Matt Davis), who’s a journalist blogger (all of us professional bloggers are extremely handsome and heroic, don’t you know, and it’s about time broadcast TV recognized it). He teams with Skye (Jessica Lucas), a production assistant on a popular television crime series called Cult, as they investigate the fans of the series who are re-creating the crimes on the show. Added meta twist: The fictional version of Cult airs on a fictional version of The CW within the show. Here’s an exclusive look at the show’s creepy key art. Cult premieres Tuesday, Feb. 19.
