'Devious Maids' reaches series-high viewership

Muy caliente, indeed.

After a bit of a bumpy start, Lifetime’s soapy drama Devious Maids is proving to be a certifiable hit. The summer series, which stars Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Edy Ganem, and Judy Reyes, was eyeballed by 2.9 million viewers last night — a 4 percent increase from last week’s episode and a 45 percent increase from the series premiere back in June, which had 2 million viewers. Obviously, the show does well in the female market: Maids grabbed 1.1 million women in the 18-49 bracket and 1.0 million women in the 25-54 bracket. Though other Lifetime series like Drop Dead Diva and The Client List sported 2.8 million viewers for their premieres, Devious Maids’ steady increase is only a good sign.

The Marc Cherry- and Eva Longoria-produced project was originally developed under ABC, which passed on the pilot before Lifetime picked it up last summer.

'Devious Maids' ratings not so bueno

One thing about Lifetime’s Devious Maids that wasn’t stereotypical: The ratings.

The new drama series from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry got off to a somewhat sluggish start on Sunday night, delivering 2 million viewers for its premiere episode. By comparison, other Lifetime dramas such as Drop Dead Diva, The Client List and Army Wives have pulled numbers closer to the 3 million mark (Client and Drop Dead both had 2.8 million for their premieres).

The show follows the lives of four Latina maids working amongst the rich and crazy in SoCal. Critics have given the show mixed-to-positive reviews. Here’s EW’s reaction to the premiere, which noted “it’s refreshing to see four talented Latina actresses highlighted and given prominent roles on a primetime television series, but it is still problematic that they all play stereotypical sexy and ‘spicy’ Latina maids.”

Marc Cherry's 'Devious Maids' comes to Lifetime this summer

The man behind Desperate Housewives, Marc Cherry, is coming out with a juicy new show this summer on Lifetime! Devious Maids, based on the telenovela Ellas son la Alegría del Hogar, will premiere on Lifetime June 23 at 10 p.m. ET. The show tells the ”upstairs-downstairs” story of a group of maids ”as clever, witty, outrageous and downright devilish as their employers.” Housewives‘ star Eva Longoria is also one of the show’s executive producer.

Two teases of the intrigue to expect: In the pilot, a maid is found murdered at a large society event. Also, Scrubs‘ Judy Reyes is the maid for… wait for it… All My Children’s Susan Lucci, whose character’s name is… wait for it… Genevieve Delatour. Ugly Betty‘s Ana Ortiz, Without a Trace‘s Roselyn Sanchez, Livin’ Loud‘s Edy Ganem, and Heroes‘ Dania Ramirez also star.
