Now we know what happened to Peter Bishop after he disappeared from history in last May’s season finale of Fringe — he took a job writing comics.

In advance of the Fox’s sci-fi saga’s season four premiere on Friday (9/8c PM), DC Entertainment is launching Beyond The Fringe, a new comic book series that fans of the show can buy for 99 cents via digital download. The first installment — available this afternoon at read.dccomics.com — is written by Joshua Jackson himself and drawn Jorge Jimenez. (Cover art is by Drew Johnson.) New issues will post every two weeks and will alternate between “A storylines” and “B storylines.” The former will explore uncharted regions of the show’s mythology; the latter will feature “what if?” tales that imagine variations of events and adventures.

Jackson’s three-part “A” arc is entitled “Peter and The Machine” and takes place between the events depicted in the season three finale and the forthcoming season premiere. DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television supplied EW with a two-page excerpt from the comic, sans captions and word balloons. However, since we watch Fringe wayyy too closely, we might surmise the context.  READ FULL STORY »

Top fall TV time-slot battles this week (and who will win)

Right after the fall schedule was announced last May, I posted a rundown of the most intriguing time-period battles and who I thought would win. There’s been a lot of buzz and new intel about these shows since then, but I’m keeping my predictions the same — plus adding a several new entries. So here they are, below. Be sure to check the Inside TV blog every morning for the ratings to see how your favorite shows perform (of course, in today’s DVR era, time periods are less important than they were five years ago, but don’t be fooled: The slots still matter — just ask any show that faced off against American Idol, or one that had the pleasure of airing after it):

Who: CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 vs. NBC’s Playboy Club vs. ABC’s Castle
When
: Mondays at 10 p.m.
Verdict: Castle pulled off a surprise victory in this slot by the end of last season against the first year of Five-0, gradually conquering a time period that it always lost to CBS when CSI: Miami was there. (Castle was especially aided by Charlie Sheen’s freak out and Two and a Half Men going into repeats — thus weakening CBS’ 9 p.m. hour’s lead into Hawaii.) So this is the rematch, with Hawaii bulking up with a ton of guest stars and adding Terry O’Quinn to the cast. Expectations are modest for Playboy Club. Hawaii will go big tonight when Men returns tonight, but in the coming weeks Castle will probably end up slightly on top. And now on Friday nights, it’s Chuck vs… READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' Friday: New promo features flashes of Peter and meaty teases of premiere -- FIRST LOOK

One week away from the return of Fringe Friday, Fox has released a significant peek at the sci-fi saga’s season 4 premiere. The tease comes in the form of the fifth and final installment in a series of promos that began in July called “Where Is Peter Bishop?” — a reference to the season 3 cliffhanger that saw Joshua Jackson’s challenger of the unknown disappearing from existence after a trip through time. (Note how Peter’s quantum leaping is evoked in the graphic featured in all of “WIPB?” spots of the numeral 4, toppled over. The icon suggests both looping and branching theories of time travel.)  READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe': New promo makes our hearts ache for Olivia -- VIDEO

If you don’t normally like to start your morning off with a dose of emotional pain to go with your caffeine, I suggest you skip this brand-new Fringe promo below that features new footage from season 4.

After a quick recap of how we got to this (totally mind-boggling) point, the promo shows Olivia talking to an unidentified person (probably Lincoln Lee?) about something Peter-sized missing in her life. “We all get really good at pretending that the loneliness isn’t there and then something comes along to remind us. I know what it’s like to have a hole in my life. It’s been there as long as I can remember,” she says.

Check it out below. READ FULL STORY »

Did you know the first 100 words of this column are the last 100 words I write every week? I say this for two reasons: 1) If you’ve ever noticed the coherency of this column increases as you work your way through it, you now know why. 2) You now also have an incentive to click to the second page of this column. (Yes! I’m paginated now! << I don’t know if that statement is the “Spoiler Room” speaking or yours truly. I’m going to say it’s the “room” since I, in fact, am not paginated.)

At any rate, take note of the little number “2″ because it’s your path 2 more scoop. (See what I did there.) Hey, I warned you just one paragraph ago…

Remember to send scoop requests to spoilerroom@ew.com (note to the two smooshed “r”s) and follow me on Twitter for more things that don’t make a lot of sense and a few things that do (like TV scoop!). @EWSandraG READ FULL STORY »

Fox doesn't expect 'Fringe' to grow in ratings

Fringe-Peter

With Fringe returning to Fridays this fall, Fox programming president Kevin Reilly says his expectations are modest for the show’s ratings.

“I don’t expect Fringe to grow,” Reilly told critics at the network’s press tour in Beverly Hills. “It’s a pretty complex show. If Fringe can do exactly what Fringe did last year, we’re going to be very happy. They’re right in the pocket creatively once again.”

On other dramas, Reilly sounded bullish on Bones despite splitting its season with The Finder. And he sounds confident So You Think You Can Dance will return despite low ratings this year, noting it “will be part of our summer profile going forward.” Also, House will haggle its producers deal this fall (Hugh Laurie is already signed for another year), and Reilly said no decision has been made yet about whether it’s a final season.

Game show Million Dollar Money Drop is “dead,” as you probably figured out.

John Noble to explore fringe research in freaky new Science Channel show -- EXCLUSIVE

How perfect is this: Science Channel is teaming with Fringe star John Noble to host a show about, yup, real-life bizarre experiments.

In Dark Matters, Noble explores the most unusual scientific research ever conducted — including head transplantation studies, actual zombie investigations (!) and attempts to cross-breed humans and those damn dirty apes (trailer below).

“The stories we share in Dark Matters are as outlandish as a great sci-fi script or as disturbing as a classic horror tale — the only difference is that they’re all true,” Noble said. “The series offers a glimpse into the dark side of science, as well as human nature.” READ FULL STORY »

Comic-Con 2011: 'Fringe' cast talks recasting Josh Jackson, and who should get naked for Emmy love

After Saturday’s Fringe panel, which featured a gag reel of all-star “auditions” for Joshua Jackson’s Peter Bishop, the cast stopped by EW’s VIP lounge at Comic-Con to chat with our own Sandra Gonzalez and debate which of those featured actors they’d like to see in the role. (Jackson called for an EW.com poll, which you’ll find below.) Later asked what they’d need to do to get shown some Emmy love, another debate broke out on who should get naked. (No poll, sorry.) Watch a clip from the interview below. READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' at Comic-Con: Is Jeff Probst or Zach Quinto replacing Josh Jackson? -- VIDEO

Gee whiz, is John Noble Fringe’s version of Alexander Skarsgard from True Blood? Noble got a huge reception from the crowd in Ballroom 20 at Comic-Con Saturday, but wouldn’t start the panel without  immediately returning the favor. “You guys are the best fans that any company can ever have,” Noble told the crowd. “Seriously, without your efforts, your rabid support, we wouldn’t be here right now. You are the best fans that ever existed.”

The entire cast showed up for the panel, including Blair Brown (Nina) and Lance Reddick (Broyles). But where was Josh Jackson? Since Peter appeared to eradicate himself from existence last season (for more about the mind-bending finale, click here), the producers made the joke that it was time to find a new one. They screened an all-star reel of  “auditions” for the crowd, which included readings from Zachary Quinto, Rebecca Mader, Damon Lindelof, Michael Emerson, Greg Grunberg, Danny Pudi, Jorge Garcia and Jeff Probst. Here’s the clip after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

'Mad Men,' 'Modern Family,' John Noble, and Christina Hendricks among Critics' Choice Award winners

mad-men-joan

The Critics’ Choice Television Awards — created by the recently established Broadcast Television Critics Association — were designed in part to be a counterpoint to the annual Emmy Awards (and the more established TCA Awards). The winners of the first annual CCTAs, however, echoed several Emmy winners of the recent past: AMC’s Mad Men took home Best Drama; ABC’s Modern Family won Best Comedy; Best Actress in a Comedy went to 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey; and The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons earned Best Actor in a Comedy.

The majority of winners, however, have not snagged an Emmy award — or, in some cases, even a nomination — but remain long-standing fan favorites.  READ FULL STORY »
