'House' series finale: Boss David Shore on how 'natural' ending came to be, the cameo that didn't happen, and those Easter Eggs

Dr. Gregory House checked out of Princeton-Plainsboro last night for the very last time after an hour that explored the man fans have come to know over eight seasons.

But letting the good doctor ride into the sunset with Wilson without talking to executive producer and creator David Shore wouldn’t seem right. So EW hopped on the phone with the House boss to break down all the twists last night and chat about how it came to be. [Spoilers ahead, obviously.] And if you missed the finale, catch up with our recap and Ken Tucker’s review.

'House' series finale ends on solid note

house-finale

After eight seasons, the series finale of House had a solid final episode in the ratings, claiming one last time period victory for Fox.

House (8.7 million viewers, 2.9), won the 9 p.m. hour Monday evening with its guest-star-filled last episode. The hour was up 32 percent from last week and the show had its best number in a few months, though House was still down quite a bit from its current season high.

After 177 episodes, including many years with really strong ratings, personally I’m a bit surprised more viewers didn’t check out the ending. Guess when we’re done with a show we’re just done, huh? Fox’s House retrospective (6.1 million, 2.0) performed fair. READ FULL STORY »

'House' series finale: Cast, creator explain why it's time for the end -- EXCLUSIVE

After eight dark and twisted seasons of House, Fox’s beloved medical drama hangs up its cane tonight with an hour-long retrospective and series finale (8-10 p.m. ET) entitled “Everybody Dies” — a tweak to one of Dr. House’s famous lines, “Everybody lies.”

Creator David Shore and the cast have kept quiet on exactly what will happen in the finale. We know Cameron (Jennifer Morrison), Thirteen (Olivia Wilde), Kutner (Kal Penn), and Masters (Amber Tamblyn) will return, as will Chase (Jesse Spencer), who left Princeton-Plainsboro May 7. The nine highest-rated canceled shows

terra-nova-finale

More than any year in recent memory, the survival of shows this season did not hinge on ratings.

You had Fox’s Fringe getting renewed for a final GTFO season with only 4.2 million viewers and slight 1.6 average rating. Then you had Terra Nova getting axed with 10.8 million viewers and a 3.6 rating. The biggest mitigating factor was a show’s cost — which usually rises along with its age — along with the difficulty of a time period, who owns the program, how intensely critics and fans feel about the series and, believe it or not, whether a network’s executives like the show. Here are the top nine highest-rated canceled shows this season:

1. Rob (CBS: 12 million viewers, 3.7 adults 18-49 rating): A 3.7? If NBC had a freshman comedy with a 3.7 average, it would run the show five nights a week this fall (Community was renewed with almost half this rating). Bully for CBS that their table scraps have these kind of numbers. The issue here was Rob Schneider’s comedy was shedding too much of its massive Big Bang Theory lead-in, and was trending the wrong direction. CBS suspects the time slot can do better. 'House' scoop: Jesse Spencer 'can't wait' for fans to see how it ends for Chase

Still shocked by Chase’s seemingly early departure from House? So is he!

EW caught up with the House star this morning at NBC’s Upfront presentation in New York, where the actor was promoting his just-picked up drama Chicago Fire. He revealed to us that he was just as stunned as the audience was when Chase decided to quit his job at Princeton-Plainsboro. “I’ve still yet to see it, but that’s how I felt. I’m still in shock, too. It’s very bittersweet, to come off something like that,” he says. But not to worry, he says, Chase will be back for next week’s series finale.

“I will be in the final episode, along with all 365 cast members that are in the final episode,” he jokes, referring to the host of returning cast members who will appear in the finale hour. “The final episode, I hope the fans enjoy and are satisfied by it. I think it’s an appropriate ending, and a satisfying ending. [It's] still bittersweet, but I think they really wrap it up very nicely, and they’ve done a fantastic job on that show.”

While mum on details, Spencer says Chase’s story ends on a rather open-ended note that may surprise people. “I can’t tell you what it is. It’s actually very short, but it’s so great. It’s this tiny little bit [that] opens up a whole new story, and we go ‘Oh my God.’ And [it leaves you] wondering,” he says. “You kind of know where it is going, but you’d like to see where it goes from there. Then the series ends. I like it. I can’t wait.” READ FULL STORY »

‘ONCE UPON A TIME’: JOSH DALLAS PREVIEWS FINALE. WILL STORYBROOKE STEP UP?
After working on Lost, Once Upon a Time executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsiss know how to tease finales. Proof? This timely characterization of Sunday’s season finale: “They are the gang. They are the Fairy Tale Avengers,” they told EW in a chat earlier this week. Take a moment to take that in. Squeal with excitement. Now, compose yourself long enough to take in some elaboration, straight from Josh Dallas, who stopped by the office just yesterday. READ FULL STORY »

'House' scoop: Jennifer Morrison returning for series finale

House‘s series finale just became a little more magical.

Once Upon a Time star and House alum Jennifer Morrison is set to return to the show following her 2009 departure from the medical drama, EW has confirmed. (The news was first reported by TVLine.) The cameo will take place in the show’s final episode, airing May 21.

As previously reported, Kal Penn, Amber Tamblyn, and Olivia Wilde are also set to return.

Back in March, Morrison had told EW she was not expecting to return to the series as she had not been approached. (Perhaps her kind words about the show changed that?) “No one’s contacted me [about returning], and we’re way too close for it to even be a possibility,” she lamented at the time. “It was an incredible part of my life….It changed my life in so many wonderful ways.”

Fox announced today that Ryan Seacrest — American Idol host, national radio personality, television producer, celestial mouthpiece, and soon-to-be Olympics team member — will host Fox’s 25th Anniversary Special, airing Sunday, April 22 at 8 p.m. ET.

House‘s Hugh Laurie, The Simpsons‘ Kelsey Grammer, and In Living Color‘s Tommy Davidson will be joining a slate of previously announced Fox family members for the two-hour special that the network promises “will showcase our hits, our misses, and everything in between.”

It’ll be reunion time for the casts of That ’70s Show, Married…With Children, Beverly Hills, 90210, and The X Files. Also slated to appear: All three American Idol judges (expect Randy Jackson to yell “Ryan’s gotta have it, Ryan!” during the show), all three Wayans brothers, Kiefer Sutherland from 24 and Touch, Ally McBeal‘s Calista Flockhart, and Seth MacFarlane from Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, and American Dad.

Olivia Wilde returning to 'House'

Thirteen is checking in one more time.

EW has confirmed that Olivia Wilde is set to reprise her role as Thirteen in the show’s series finale, airing May 21. TVLine first reported.

Wilde last appeared on the show in October, and left — seemingly for good — after House (Hugh Laurie) fired Thirteen. (He did it so she wouldn’t feel compelled to return to her post out of guilt.) Well, obviously it won’t stick.

The question now is, how will she return? As a patient? (Her character has long suffered from Huntington’s disease) A doctor? Or in a dream? (Hey, crazier things have happened.)

Michael B. Jordan checking into 'House' final season tonight

Michael-B-Jordan

A lot has changed since Michael B. Jordan filmed his guest stint on tonight’s episode of House. For one, at the time, he (and likely many of those around him) had no idea they were working on one of the show’s last episodes ever.

“I don’t think at the time I was shooting the show people knew it was going to be the last season,” he says. “But it’s one of those shows that you want to be involved in at some point in your career — like a Law & Order or CSI. To be able to work on the show on its final season, it’s definitely an honor.”

As patient-of-the week, Jordan, 25, admits he spends a lot of time in bed — naturally. But Will Westwood’s (Jordan) life outside of his medical struggles (he’s been blind since birth and is suffering from a life-threatening infection) is pretty complicated, too. “It’s a roller-coaster ride episode. It’ll make you laugh, smile, make you sad. It has everything wrapped into one — House style,” he says.

Jordan’s own career has been a bit of a thrill ride lately as well. After his memorable stint on Friday Night Lights (the series ended last year), Jordan has appeared on several episodes of the latest season of NBC’s Parenthood, which is executive-produced by FNL head writer-executive producer Jason Katims. Jordan is also set to appear on Katims’ next project, County, which was ordered to pilot from NBC in January. The show follows a group of doctors, nurses, and administrators as they navigate life in an underfunded L.A. Hospital.

“We’re still figuring him out,” Jordan says of his character, intern Travis Hancock. “But I’m looking forward to it. You see so many hospital dramas and — not to take anything away from any of them — but we’re trying to do something different. We want to breathe new life into an old idea.”

The show will also reunite Jordan with his Parenthood costar Jason Ritter, with whom, Jordan points out, he never shared a scene. “We’ve been talking about doing something together since then, and look what happened. It’s going to be a good year,” he says.
