'How I Met Your Mother' scoop: James Van Der Beek to return

It wouldn’t be a farewell season of How I Met Your Mother without one more appearance from James Van Der Beek.

EW has confirmed that Van Der Beek, who has appeared twice on the program as Robin’s first boyfriend Simon, is poised to return to the series for an episode titled “Bedtime Stories.” READ FULL STORY

Bryan Cranston set to return to 'How I Met Your Mother'

Breaking Bad might be sailing into the sunset on Sunday but fans of the show will get a chance to see Bryan Cranston on TV again very soon.

CBS announced today that the Breaking Bad star is set to reprise his role as Hammond Druthers, Ted’s former jerk boss/co-worker, who last appeared in the show’s second season. Cranston, who right now is booked for one episode (to air this fall), is the latest star to schedule a return to HIMYM as it moves along in its final season and he will probably not be the last.

In case you missed it, here’s our review of this week’s season premiere.

'HIMYM' season premiere: Could Barney and Robin be ... related? -- EXCLUSIVE CLIP

Could Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) be just a little too perfect for each other? Like sharing DNA too perfect? The happy couple is in the thick of wedding preparations in the season premiere of How I Met Your Mother, and as they head out to Farhampton for the big day, they discover something else they might have in common.

But the scare is totally worth it for Barney’s brilliant Game of Thrones shout out. Check out the exclusive clip below to find out which shady character he references in the back of the car.

'Bones,' 'Chicago Fire,' 'Suits,' 'How I Met Your Mother': Find out what's next in the Spoiler Room

Vacation is over. Time to kick off the Fall TV season in style!

Step one: Pick up this monster of an issue. Step two:  Program DVR(s). Step 3: Enjoy the scoop below! Step 4: Send me your burning questions (spoilerroom@ew.com)

‘BONES': FOUR BURNING QUESTIONS ANSWERED

+ Tease a cute Bones/Booth moment! — Rita
The end of the premiere is very touching. Watching Bones deal with her hurt feelings throughout the episode is hard (especially since Emily Deschanel is so good!) but it’s worth it for the ending.

+ Anything you can tell me about Pelant’s demise? — Cassie
Here’s what I can say: In the premiere, you don’t SEE Pelant, but his presence is so foreboding that a paranoid person might start looking at every piece of electronics in their house with a raised eyebrow. Meanwhile, anyone looking to buy some electronics?

+ How much do we see Freddie Prinze Jr. in the premiere? Did you like him? — Farrah
He doesn’t have a huge amount of screen time in the first episode, but we are introduced to the character, knowing he’ll be back at some point. (By the end of the hour, he owes Booth a favor!) And with such a small amount of screen time, it’s hard to read this character, but I like what I see so far. He’s almost seems like alt-Booth — almost how I imagine Booth had he not found Brennan and the Squints. If that makes sense.

+ Any teases for episodes beyond the premiere or the wedding? — Val
In the second episode — which, as previously reported, takes place at a couples retreat — there’s a sweat lodge scene. #thankyouproducers As for the wedding, this affair won’t be rushed. We’ll see a reception. There’s lots of returns. (Ryan O’Neal! Ty Panitz! Cyndi Lauper!) And, duh, a ceremony!

‘CHICAGO FIRE': FIVE PREMIERE TEASES!

Chicago Fire fans should be excited about the season to come. Why? I’ll give you FIVE reasons…

+ The episode takes place on Casey’s first day back after taking a trip to clear his head. He’s still struggling with the death of Hallie but he’s not as bad as when we last saw him depressed and disheveled. So are things looking up for him? Not exactly. By the end of the episode, he’s going to find himself very close to a situation that promises more headache-inducing situations. Can’t this guy catch a break?

+ One of the firefighters betrays his colleagues in what they believe to be a big way. It’s actually more hilarious than serious.

+ Michelle Forbes is deliciously evil in the role of Gail McLeod, a ball-busting consultant who is charged with keeping an eye on the firehouse. Gail is also the lady charged with deciding which firehouses are due for closure because of budget cuts. Her first interaction with Boden will leave you worried about Firehouse 51.

+ We learn one of the characters is being targeted! Like, someone-wants-you-dead targeted.

+ One of the crew is going to run for union president! I love the character the writers picked to lead this storyline. Guesses?

‘SUITS': SARAH RAFFERTY TEASES THE FINALE

This season of Suits has been a rollercoaster ride of the best kind — both in terms of the relationships on the show and in terms of the larger arc about the firm as a business. And if Sarah Rafferty is to be believed, the finale will be a fitting ending to a twist-filled season. In the episode, airing Tuesday, the firm will still be reeling from the divorce with Darby, and on top of that, dealing with the lawsuit brought against them by Ava Hessington. “For better or worse, everyone has to come together and deal with that,” teases Rafferty.

But it’s not all drama, she says. “I can tell you there are some surprising, warm moments,” she says, “but just when you’re sinking into that great feeling of warm fuzziness, you’re kind of slammed with a bit of a revelation that you’re going to have to wait to find out [more] about in the winter premiere.” That’s right, there’s a cliffhanger. Surprise! (Not really.)

Elsewhere, look for Donna to have a really great scene with Stephen Huntley that takes place in prison, as seen in the promo. “You get a chance to see Donna have a little bit of closure,” she says.

MORE SCOOPLETS THIS WAY…

'HIMYM' scoop: William Zabka returns for final season

Talk about a comeback: William Zabka, the beloved “villain” from The Karate Kid who was featured last season on How I Met Your Mother, will return to the CBS comedy this fall.

Zabka will appear as himself in at least eight episodes this season. The creators hoped to keep it as a surprise but star Cobie Smulders posted a photo of her and him on Instagram today. (Sally McSpoiler!) READ FULL STORY

'How I Met Your Mother' teaser: 'See the mother, meet the mother, get to know the mother' -- VIDEO

For eight years, How I Met Your Mother fans (not to mention Ted’s kids) have been waiting for the big reveal. And now that we know what the mother looks like — and a little about Cristin Milioti, the actress behind her — it’s time to start seeing more of her and possibly, learning a few new things about her. The latest season 9 promo, for example, holds the most footage we’ve ever seen of the mother. What we learn: She likes cookies and isn’t against bopping someone in the nose with a magazine if they try to bite her (we’re looking at you, Lily).

No big opening number at this year's Emmys -- and more hints from Neil Patrick Harris

Second-time Emmys host Neil Patrick Harris isn’t just an actor, singer, dancer, director, writer, child stardom survivor, evil genius, amateur puppeteer, and magic enthusiast — he’s also a seasoned awards show producer with three Tony telecasts and the 2009 Emmys already under his belt.

Accordingly, Harris has been actively involved with every aspect of TV’s upcoming big night. “I become very, very particular [about] even an errant comma or a misplaced inflection,” Harris explained to EW during a recent chat. “Not only the things that I say, but the presenters’ dialogue as well.” At least the three-time Emmy winner won’t have to worry about contingency plans this time around; though Harris is up for an award this year (for Special Class Programs), it’s not a prize that will be handed out on air. (In 2009, the host lost Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Series to Jon Cryer, then interviewed his rival from his podium.)

Will the How I Met Your Mother star’s micromanaging help him strike hosting gold again? We won’t know until 65th Emmy Awards air on CBS Sept. 22 — though Harris did give a few more hints about we can expect at this year’s show. Think less Miley, more magic.

Alyson Hannigan pitches a 'How I Met Your Mother' spin-off and talks J.J. Abrams, 'Buffy,' and 'Star Wars'. (How's that for a headline?)

Alyson Hannigan who plays Lily on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother doesn’t want the fun to end, even though CBS announced the series would sign off after 9 seasons this spring. “I’m trying to convince [Jason] Segel to do the spin-off,” says Hannigan. “He said he’ll do it if it’s called, Out By Lunch and we can get out by lunch everyday and we only work a couple days a week. I’m like, ‘I’m in.’ We can do it—we work really quickly together.” READ FULL STORY

'How I Met Your Mother': Meet The Mother, Cristin Milioti, for the first time -- EXCLUSIVE

We were on set when Milioti filmed her first scenes of the new season, premiering Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. (Spoiler alert: Said scenes involve cookies and a catfight.) It’s wedding time for Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders), so it’s hardly surprising that the groom’s father will be in attendance. John Lithgow is returning to How I Met Your Mother as Barney’s father for an episode during the upcoming season, EW has confirmed.

Lithgow appeared in two previous episodes as Barney’s father, Jerry Whitaker.  The wedding is drawing a number of  guest stars to the table, including returning guest star Wayne Brady as well as Sherri Shepherd and Ellie Kemper.

'How I Met Your Mother' stars tear up at Comic-Con over final season -- VIDEO

We didn’t mean to make them cry!

The How I Met Your Mother cast — Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel — sat down with EW’s Laura Hertzfeld at Comic-Con, and what started as a lighthearted interview (“Kiefer Sutherland is the mom!”) turned emotional when we asked what the actors will miss most after their ninth and final season.

See the clearly tight-knit cast (the five of them even shared one couch that would barely fit Segel by himself) open up in the video below:
