'The Show With Vinny': The best 'Jersey Shore' spin-off. (But don't let the word 'best' fool you.)

The best thing you can say about The Show With Vinny — MTV’s latest Jersey Shore franchise extension — is that the concept isn’t half bad. Vinny Guadagnino was the most believable human being on the Jersey Shore cast, the only person on the show who didn’t gradually morph into a cartoonish self-parody. He was also genuinely funny — his riffs with hetero-lifemate Pauly D lent the show a slight air of self-awareness.

And there is a lot of potential in having Vinny interview the celebs in his own house, with his mom and sisters and various other relatives on hand to provide a homey vibe. The whole talk-show format has gotten pretty stale lately. Celebrities are always on their guard inside an overlit studio and in front of an audience. Wouldn’t they feel more comfortable in a family dining room, with the host’s mom serving them broccoli rabe?

MTV to debut 'Buckwild' in 'Jersey Shore' slot on Jan. 3 -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

In just a few weeks, it will be time to pack up the beach towels, tanning oils, and tanning oils and say goodbye to Jersey Shore for good. How will you fill your Thursday nights at 10 p.m.? MTV is hoping to hit pay dirt (mud?) several hundred miles southwest of New Jersey with Buckwild, a new reality series about nine young-adult friends in small-town West Virginia who say they are living by the motto, “Whatever happens, happens.” And what seems to be happening is a lot of riding down hills inside giant tires, driving trucks dangerously through mud, tearing up the trails on ATVs and motorcycles, drinking, body licking, fighting with neighbors, and doing Jackass-y stunts that sometimes involve construction equipment. But don’t worry, there’s a heartfelt side to all of this ruckus, as you will see in this two-minute trailer, when one guy gives flowers to a girl he’s sweet on. READ FULL STORY »

Jersey Shore‘s Vinny Guadagnino is getting his own MTV talk show.

Considered the most sensitive of the Shore boys, Vinny will star in a hybrid talk/reality series for the network titled The Show with Vinny.

The project will tweak the usual talk format by taking celebrities out of the studio and having Vinny interview them in his Staten Island home with his colorful Italian family. Celebrity guests will come over for a meal and candid conversation, with lots of commentary from his hostess mother Paula, his partying Uncle Nino and others.

“Vinny’s unique mix of humor, intelligence, curiosity and heart make him the perfect choice for this genre busting take on the interview format,” said Chris Linn, MTV executive vp of programming and head of production. “As the lives of the Jersey Shore cast evolve, we are excited to explore new ground while still delivering the laughs and surprises that fans have come to expect from the franchise.”

Vinny will also appear on the upcoming fundraising special Restore the Shore (more details on that here). The Nov. 15th special encourage viewers to contribute to the rebuilding of Seaside Heights, the main location of MTV’s hit Jersey Shore, which will soon air its final episode.

The Show with Vinny is executive produced by Jersey Shore producer SallyAnn Salsano, along with MTV’s Jacquelyn French, and will represent the third series spawned from party-hearty reality show. There’s also Snooki & JWoww, which returns for its second season Jan. 8, and The Pauly D Project. Shore is MTV’s highest-rated series ever and continues to perform strong on Thursday nights, averaging 3.5 million viewers.

The cast of Jersey Shore is reuniting for an MTV fundraiser to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The effort will include a live one-hour special featuring the Shore cast along with other celebrity guests encouraging viewers to aid New Jersey relief efforts. Last week’s mega-storm devastated Seaside Heights where several editions of the reality hit was filmed, including the current final season.

MTV is partnering on the fundraiser with Architecture for Humanity, a non-profit that provides design and construction services after natural disasters. The organization is creating a “Restore the Shore” fund to collect donations for helping reconstruct the Seaside Heights boardwalk, as well as supporting the re-building efforts of businesses and residents in the area.

The “Restore the Shore” special airs live on Thursday, Nov. 15 from MTV’s Times Square Studio. Viewers will be encouraged to donate online or via text message during and after the event. Architecture for Humanity intends to work with the Borough of Seaside Heights to award rebuilding grants to local contractors, similar to its relief efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. On Friday, NBC aired a Sandy fundraiser featuring live musical guests that helped raise $23 million. READ FULL STORY »

'Jersey Shore' final season: Watch the (highly emotional!) promos here

These new promos for the final season of Jersey Shore are one Sarah McLachlan song away from being ASPCA-level tear-jerkers. (Oh, except the ASPCA actually matters.)

But you have to admire the cheeky spots, which debuted during the Video Music Awards. (One is set to a Boyz II Men song!) They come just days after the network announced Shore was headed to the big tanning salon in the sky, and if these are any indication, MTV is not going to let it go quietly.

MTV reveals why 'Jersey Shore' is ending

SNOOKI-GOODBYE.jpg

MTV is speaking out about its decision to conclude its top-rated series Jersey Shore. Below, the network’s executive vp of programming Chris Linn reveals why the reality phenomenon is coming to a close this year, teases final season storylines, reveals how much Snooki actually lived in the house and what’s next for the network.

EntertainmentWeekly: Why is MTV ending Shore?
Chris Linn: We’ve always said we’d do the show for as long as it made sense. We noticed what was going on in their lives, with Nicole (Snooki) having her baby, the relationships, etc. it felt like the right time to bring it to a close and end on a high note.

How much was the rising cost of the cast a factor?
Linn: It hasn’t been a significant consideration. The show still dominates, it’s the No. 1 show in our core demo, it’s still incredibly successful. It’s really about their lives evolving and changing in a way that moves them away from the original conceit of the show. As successful as the show is, we don’t want to be in a situation where we’re milking every ratings point out of a franchise until the end. Our audience demands reinvention and is always looking for what’s new. As tempting as it is to squeeze something to the end, we made what we think is the right, tough choice to end the show on top.

There’s been some conflicting reports about when the cast was told. When did they know for sure?
Linn: There’s been a sense for awhile this could be the last season. We didn’t really make a final decision until near the end of shooting. We just recently confirmed the information [to the cast].

MTV ending 'Jersey Shore'

mtv-jersey-shore

New Jersey’s unemployment rate is about to get a little higher.

MTV is pulling the plug on its modern classic reality series Jersey Shore.

The sixth and final edition of the show recently wrapped production and will debut Thursday, Oct. 4, with the crew back in Seaside Heights for one last party. The network is also airing a retrospective Jersey Shore special titled “Gym, Tan, Look Back” that will include a first look at the final season. The special will air before the Video Music Awards on Thursday, Sept. 6. The Shore cast will make a live appearance on the red carpet during the VMAs pre-show, as well.

Shore was one of the most polarizing shows in TV history, but no one can deny its enormous success and pop culture influence. The series debuted in 2009 amid controversy from Italian-American groups, which accused the show’s self-described “guido” cast as acting like ethnic stereotypes. But MTV viewers shrugged off the complaints and, after a somewhat average series premiere, Jersey Shore quickly took off in the ratings. The show launched a whole lexicon of Shore slang (fist pumping, gym-tan-laundry, smush room, getting-it-in…) and made stars of its nickname-stuffed cast, who lined up lucrative endorsement and appearance deals.

In early 2011, Shore hit nearly 9 million viewers and became the most popular program in MTV’s history. Moreover, the basic cable reality series routinely managed to trounce major broadcast network shows on Thursday nights in the key adults 18-49 demographic. READ FULL STORY »

'Snooki & JWoww' premiere ratings soft

snooki-jwow

MTV’s second Jersey Shore spin-off Snooki & JWoww wasn’t expected to come close to the ratings of the mega-hit mothership. But you’d expect the girls to be more competitive, with, for instance, The Pauly D Project.

Snooki & JWoww debuted to 2.4 million viewers Thursday night and a 1.1 in the adult demo (EW.com’s photo recap here), with MTV pointing out the number grows to 4.1 million with repeats. Still, that premiere is going to get compared to the 2.9 million who tuned in for Pauly D’s spinoff last March. Maybe the difference is that Snooks had to self-start at 10 p.m. rather than being blessed with a large Punk’d lead-in? Or perhaps it’s because she’s now so heavily covered in the media, watching JWoww discover her friend is pregnant seems a bit like yesterday’s news? Either way, the numbers are as soft as crocodilly.
