'How I Met Your Mother' stars recall the time they rhymed all their lines: A 'Bedtime Stories' preview

The ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother has been all about stretching the sitcom limits: All 24 episodes take place over the course of one wedding weekend, and in another narrative twist, Monday night’s half-hour (8 p.m. ET on CBS) will play out entirely in rhyme.

Last week, EW was on the set of the show’s 200th episode — premiering at the end of January — and we had to ask a few questions about the clever concept. So far, we know that the episode (titled “Bedtime Stories”) has Marshall (Jason Segel) trying to get baby Marvin to sleep with some very personal nursery rhymes.

“The structure of the flashbacks are that Marshall is recounting crazy things that happened to each one of us,” Neil Patrick Harris told EW on set, adding that two of the three acts involve Barney and his fiancée Robin (Cobie Smulders). “There’s a great adventure that Robin tells about this crazy night where she had superhuman powers, and then Barney recounts this dream tale of how he is the ultimate player in New York City.”

We didn’t mean to make them cry!

The How I Met Your Mother cast — Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Segel — sat down with EW’s Laura Hertzfeld at Comic-Con, and what started as a lighthearted interview (“Kiefer Sutherland is the mom!”) turned emotional when we asked what the actors will miss most after their ninth and final season.

See the clearly tight-knit cast (the five of them even shared one couch that would barely fit Segel by himself) open up in the video below:

The Panel: Neil Patrick Harris (Barney), Cobie Smulders (Robin), Josh Radnor (Ted), Jason Segel (Marshall), Alyson Hannigan (Lily), Carter Bays (co-creator and executive producer), Craig Thomas (co-creator and executive producer), Pam Fryman (director and executive producer), and EW’s own Sandra Gonzalez moderating

Footage Screened: No season 9 sneak peeks, but the intro video showed Ted’s exasperated kids (Lyndsey Fonseca and David Henrie) at the end of their rope after eight years of listening to the world’s longest stream-of-consciousness story. Watch the “kids” (who are now twentysomethings) go on an F-bomb-riddled rant below:

'How I Met Your Mother' stars talk about the return of Joe Manganiello

The bros who rock brunch are back together!

Joe Manganiello returns to How I Met Your Mother in tonight’s episode as Brad, Marshall’s law-school buddy memorable for his tendency to speak in abbreviations (like “eggs benny” and “ridonc”), his failed hockey date with Robin and his determination to bro-ify everything (even Sunday brunch, Mamma Mia!, and bed-and-breakfasts).

In tonight’s episode, “The Stamp Tramp,” Marshall finds Brad on the street, looking very unkempt. Marshall wants to see his old friend back on his feet, so he recommends him for a job at his firm, but this being How I Met Your Mother, that’s when things start to go awry.

Manganiello’s first episode on the CBS comedy aired in 2006, and ever since then, even after he started playing Alcide Herveaux on True Blood, fans continue to approach him in public talking about Brad without ever mentioning werewolves.

“People love bros having brunch,” Manganiello told EW. “Even with the beard and the hair, people come up to me like, ‘Oh bro! You’re Brad!’”

“The Stamp Tramp” marks Manganiello’s first appearance on the show since he started work on True Blood, but the regular talent on the show contend that he’s the same Joe they knew before he made it big on the HBO vampire show. Read on to learn what the cast of How I Met Your Mother – along with the show’s longtime director, Pamela Fryman – had to say about the return of Brad. READ FULL STORY

'HIMYM' star Josh Radnor: Don't stunt cast the mother!

How I Met Your Mother is getting closer to the moment when Ted will meet his wife-to-be and fans will finally see the face of the woman who’s been skirting the camera for several seasons. While series creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays know the details of the fateful meeting, the show’s stars are very much in the dark about what’s “a little further down the road.”

But that doesn’t mean the actors don’t have their opinions about casting.

“I don’t think it should be any sort of stunt casting,” Josh Radnor told EW while we were on set last week. “I think it would be more interesting to have this fresh, exciting face that Ted has never seen before and neither have people who watch the show.”

'How I Met Your Mother': Showrunners talk about the (possible) beginning of the end

It’s the beginning of the end, How I Met Your Mother fans – or it might be. Anyone who has watched the season 8 premiere may have seen the last season opener of Ted Mosby’s televised journey toward finding the mother of his children.

The CBS show’s writers approached tonight’s episode, “Farhampton,” like it was the beginning of the show’s final season.

“We sort of come in every day and go, ‘This is the last season of How I Met Your Mother’ until we hear different… We really feel like this launches the last season,” co-creator Craig Thomas told reporters last week. Still no definitive word on whether a ninth season is on the horizon.

So right now, the writers are going full speed ahead to the reveal of the mother, with a Plan B in place in the instance the show is renewed. Thomas and fellow showrunner Carter Bays revealed more about their plans for season 8 and about was going on in tonight’s episode. Fair warning: SPOILERS AHEAD about tonight’s episode and the fate of Ted Mosby and the mother. READ FULL STORY
