Alec Baldwin to guest star as 'a controversial New York newspaper columnist' on 'Law & Order: SVU'

While Alec Baldwin just penned a column in which he vows to quit public life, he’s not leaving just yet: We’ve got details about his upcoming guest appearance on Law & Order: SVU.

Baldwin will play Jimmy MacArthur, “a controversial New York newspaper columnist who questions the SVU squad’s motives during the investigation of a potential hate crime/rape case.” Rumor has it that MacArthur will directly butt heads with SVU’s finest, Sergeant Olivia Benson.

“New York City has had a long history of high profile and controversial newspaper columnists, whose influence extends beyond the newsroom,” Executive Producer Warren Leight said in a press release. “In our story, ‘Jimmy Mac’s’ reporting  interferes with the investigation, which has a ripple effect when the case goes to trial. We couldn’t ask for a better actor for Mariska to work with in her directorial debut. Their chemistry on screen is palpable.”

But Baldwin isn’t the only one appearing in Mariska Hargitay’s directorial debut episode: Katie Couric is set to cameo, “playing herself as a talk show host who quizzes MacArthur about the headline grabbing case.”

The episode airs Wednesday, March 19, at 9 p.m.on NBC.

Katie Couric leaving ABC News for Yahoo: report

Katie Couric’s next move appears to be online.

An ABC News executive who requested anonymity because talks aren’t complete said the veteran news anchor has an opportunity at Yahoo that is too good to pass up.

Couric has been working at ABC News, but published reports have said that Yahoo is seeking her to host an interview show to be aired on the company’s website.

A spokesman for Couric declined comment.

Couric is in her second season on an ABC daytime talk show, which is not expected to be renewed.

Valerie Harper and 'Mary Tyler Moore Show' cast reunite -- VIDEO

Here’s something that should suddenly make this nothing day seem worthwhile: This afternoon, Katie takes a trip to the set of Hot in Cleveland, where Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Harper, and Cloris Leachman recently filmed a guest spot alongside their old Mary Tyler Moore cast mates (and current Cleveland residents) Betty White and Georgia Engel.

Though it’s been over 30 years since the ladies appeared on a sitcom together, you’d never know it from their strong rapport. Here’s a sneak peek of Moore and Harper explaining why Mary Richards had such a hold on women. (Valerie’s explanation: “Mary is who you wish you were, Rhoda is who you probably are, and Phyllis is who you’re afraid you’ll become.”)

Manti Te'o tells Katie Couric he did lie after learning girlfriend was fake, but only briefly -- VIDEO

Katie Couric’s upcoming sit-down with Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o — the Heisman Trophy runner-up currently best known for his involvement in an elaborate online hoax — should be a doozy.

Earlier today, Good Morning America premiered a short clip from the interview in which Te’o reveals that he did briefly lie to the press after learning that his beloved girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, never actually existed. As Couric disapprovingly notes, Te’o “stuck to the script” even though he knew “something was amiss” after receiving a call from someone claiming to be Kekua on Dec. 6 — despite the fact that Kekua supposedly succumbed to cancer earlier last fall.

“Katie, put yourself in my situation,” Te’o replied. “This girl, who I committed myself to, died on September 12. Now I get a phone call on December 6, saying that she’s alive, and then I’m going be put on national TV two days later. And to ask me about the same question. You know, what would you do?”

The segment also features a clip of Diane O’Meara, a 23-year-old marketing executive who told NBC’s Today on Tuesday that her photos were used by the creator of Lennay’s profile — allegedly 22-year-old Roniah Tuiasosopo, who went to high school with O’Meara — without her consent. Tuiasosopo’s former football coach appears in the video as well, telling ABC News that the apparent hoax mastermind is a good kid from a “good loving family.”

Katie Couric to reveal her own bulimia struggles on today's 'Katie'

X Factor judge Demi Lovato will discuss her prolonged battle with body image, bulimia, and bullying on this afternoon’s episode of Katie. But she’s not the only one opening up about her troubled past: Katie Couric will also candidly discuss her own struggle with bulimia.

“I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that,” Couric reveals on the show, according to the New York Post. “And I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that’s wrong, you’re full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself, whether it’s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn’t sugarless, that I would sometimes beat myself up for that.

“How do you have a healthy relationship with food, and say, ‘You know what, I can have one cookie and it’s OK?'” she continues. “That is such a huge thing for people who wrestle with this.”

On the scene: E L James talks 'Fifty Shades' with Katie Couric

Katie may be daytime’s most colorful show. The greenroom is literally painted a soft mint green. Deep blues adorn the high-tech, mechanized set. Audience members are decked out in numerous brightly hued cardigans. And today, the show’s stage was bathed by sultry red lights in honor of Couric’s guest — Erika Leonard, a.k.a. Fifty Shades of Grey author E L James. (Fifty Shades hero Christian Grey does his dirtiest deeds in a chamber known as the Red Room of Pain.)

The kinky theme didn’t stop with that crimson glow. For one day only, the usually demure Katie logo was adorned with a pair of handcuffs naughtily looped around the “k.” And Couric herself drew whoops from the audience when she appeared at the top of the hour in a sleeveless black leather dress and sky-high stilettos — to the tune of Rihanna’s “S&M,” naturally. “Relax — this won’t hurt at all,” Couric joked, introducing herself as our “mistress” for the day. What would Matt Lauer think?!

Given all this, audience members probably expected James to emerge wearing an American Horror Story-style rubber fetish suit — or at least to be as boisterous and open as Anastasia Steele’s inner goddess.  READ FULL STORY

Robin Roberts leaves 'GMA' one day early; Oprah tops list of celebrity subs

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts was supposed to begin a medical leave of absence after Friday’s show. But in a surprise move, the ailing newswoman announced on air this morning that today would, in fact, be her last day on GMA “for a while.”

“Some things happened at home,” Roberts said, explaining that her 88-year-old mother is also in poor health. Roberts and her sister, Sally-Ann, are both heading to Mississippi to care for her and be with other family members affected by Hurricane Isaac. Once home, Roberts will also begin preparing for a bone marrow transplant to treat her myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS.

Though her farewell was emotional, Roberts presented a brave face: “‘Life provides losses and heartbreak for all of us. But the greatest tragedy is to have the experience and miss the meaning,'” she said, reciting an inspirational quote. “I am determined not to miss that meaning.” READ FULL STORY

Other celebrity guests scheduled for the show’s first three weeks include Barbra Streisand, Jennifer Lopez, Heidi Klum, Susan Sarandon, Chelsea Handler, Sofia Vergara, Fifty Shades of Grey author E L James, Demi Lovato, and Wendy Williams. Katie Couric signs on for Yahoo! digital news show

Following in the footsteps of another TV icon Larry King, Katie Couric is making a landmark move toward the age of digital television by signing up to host a weekly online news show. Per Ad Week, Katie’s Take will launch as a standalone page on Yahoo!, which partnered with ABC News last year. The emerging format will give the site “more editorial voice and personality,” said the site’s Vice President of Video Programming Erin McPherson, and Nestlé brand Poland Spring has already inked a sponsorship deal.

As for Couric’s syndicated show, Katie, ABC News president Ben Sherwood insisted Katie’s Take wouldn’t interfere with its projected October launch. “She’ll participate in our political coverage as we get closer to the elections,” said Sherwood. “But [with the syndicated show,] she’s got a real full-time job.”

Katie Couric dances back into your heart in 'Good Morning America' promos

ABC really wants you to know that Katie Couric is guest hosting Good Morning America next week, starting on April 2 while Robin Roberts is on vacation. In a series of new promos for GMA, Roberts literally throws Couric the keys to the breakfast news program. If your heart is easily meltable (and if said melting is quickly exacerbated by adorable one-liners from bubbly morning news anchors), then be warned: the promos are darn delightful.

Watch Couric “do Roberts a solid,” hang in the kitchen with “Wolfie” Puck, and even prank her masterfully-coiffed co-anchor George Stephanopoulos by referencing that other morning show: READ FULL STORY
