'Klondike': Richard Madden on that ending

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched the final installment of Discovery’s three-part gold-rush miniseries Klondike, stop reading  now. Star Richard Madden chatted about the ending — from its surprising potty humor to the nightmares it gave him. READ FULL STORY

'Klondike': Richard Madden talks icy shoot (plus, see his dad's cameo!)

Discovery’s first scripted miniseries Klondike, starring Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden, begins Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. ET (and continues through Jan. 22). The stories of making the gold-rush drama, which costars Abbie Cornish, Sam Shepard, Tim Blake Nelson, and Tim Roth, are as fascinating as the tale that unfolds onscreen. When Madden, who plays real-life prospector Bill Haskell — a man who learns that nature and human nature are equally dangerous in remote locales — stopped by Entertainment Weekly Radio recently, he chatted about filming some of his most harrowing scenes. Listen to an excerpt below in which he describes really digging a costar out of a fake avalanche, going hypothermic after getting tossed around in Class IV river rapids, and hearing the “boom” of ice shifting (which sounds particularly great in his Scottish accent) while filming on a frozen lake. Then, read on for more about those key scenes — and to see a photo of Madden’s father’s cameo.

Richard Madden on his lack of 'Klondike' headwear (and having a friend who owns a replica Iron Throne) -- LISTEN!

Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden is nothing if not a good sport. When the actor, who stars in Discovery’s three-night gold-rush miniseries Klondike (premiering Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. ET), stopped by Entertainment Weekly Radio this week, we asked him to play a game of “Hot/Cold” and guess: 1.) How many minutes the Klondike costume department dared to cover his curls and put his character — smart-turned-brooding prospector Bill Haskell — in a hat.* 2.) How many replica Iron Thrones HBO had really sold as of April 2013, when a female Thrones fans posted an ad online searching for a Robb Stark lookalike to do some sexual roleplaying in the one she claimed to have acquired.

Listen to a clip below. Madden also chats about recording the audio commentary for GoT‘s Red Wedding episode (the season 3 DVD is out next month), so spoiler alert! READ FULL STORY

'Klondike': Watch Richard Madden deal with an avalanche -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Yes, a lot of us are dealing with snow today, but here’s a reminder it could always be worse. In Klondike, Discovery’s first scripted miniseries (premiering Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. ET), prospective gold miners Bill Haskell (Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden) and Byron Epstein (Kick-Ass 2‘s Augustus Prew) cross a treacherous mountain pass on their way to even more dangerous Dawson City to stake their claim.

In the exclusive clip below, the actors were actually hiking up Fortress Mountain, outside Calgary, Canada, at a location accessible only by snowmobile. The cast and crew spent four days filming the trek — along with an avalanche, courtesy of hand-set explosives that had been lowered by helicopter, and its aftermath — at a height of roughly 10,000 feet.

You’ll want to max out your screen’s brightness. It’s a dark scene, which adds to the feeling of impending doom.

First trailer: Richard Madden's action-adventure 'Klondike' -- EXCLUSIVE

Former Game of Thrones star Richard Madden’s new project Klondike has a trailer full of action, drama, romance and adventure.

Discovery’s miniseries stars Madden and Augustus Prew (The Borgias) as childhood best friends in 1897 who head seek their fortune in the Yukon Territories during the gold rush. The production prided itself on shooting in authentic environments and using practical effects — avoiding CGI whenever possible (so when Madden is trekking across a mountaintop or riding river rapids, he’s actually doing it). Klondike premieres in January. This first trailer looks great. Check it out below. “You either leave with your gold or with your soul.” READ FULL STORY

First photos: Richard Madden as 'Klondike' explorer -- EXCLUSIVE

Richard Madden has a new pelt!

Here’s a first look at the former Game of Thrones actor in his upcoming Discovery channel miniseries Klondike. The adventure stars Madden and Augustus Prew (The Borgias) as “childhood best friends Bill Haskell and Byron Epstein, who head west in 1897 to seek their fortune in the Yukon Territories during the gold rush, where they face a harrowing journey of adventure, excitement and danger at every turn.”

Madden, who played King in the North Robb Stark on the HBO hit, says he had watched Discovery’s reality show Gold Rush and was impressed by the Klondike script. “It’s epic, and ‘epic’ is a word I use rarely to describe something,” the actor told EW. “It’s a story that’s not really been told. [The character’s] situations are so extreme physically and emotionally. I’ve done lots of different [projects] and I’ve never been so excited.”

Madden says the demanding role required mountaineering in bitter cold in Alberta and, during one scene, throwing himself into Grade 4 river rapids. “I tried to convince myself that it’s just a big set and they can turn off these river rapids whenever they wanted,” he said.

Klondike debuts next year. Madden’s next project after Klondike marks a return to the fantasy genre; playing Prince Charming in Disney’s reboot of Cinderella. READ FULL STORY
