Exclusive photo: Kristin Chenoweth as Maleficent in Disney's 'Descendants'

Earlier this week, EW debuted a first look at the titular characters in Disney Channel’s original movie Descendants—the children of some of Disney’s iconic heritage characters who attend a prep school with other famous offspring (like Jane, daughter of the Fairy Godmother, and Audrey, the daughter of Sleeping Beauty).

Today, we’ve got another preview of the 2015 DCOM (that is, Disney Channel Original Movie). This time, it’s Kristin Chenoweth’s malevolent Maleficent who steals the focus.

“Who didn’t love to hate Maleficent?” says director Kenny Ortega, who helms Descendants after finding great success on another DCOM franchise, High School Musical. “You have the incomparable Kristin Chenoweth with this fantastic chemistry with Dove Cameron, who plays her daughter, and wonderful wit and good humor with Kathy Najimy, who plays her neighbor, the Evil Queen. It’s just a dream.”

In the movie, Maleficent is the only villain among those held prisoner on the Isle of the Lost who has not completely given up hope on conquering the kingdom. In the photo at hand, Maleficent is scolding her daughter Mal (Cameron) for not reaching her evil potential, while the Evil Queen’s daughter Evie (Sofia Carson), Cruella de Vil’s son Carlos (Cameron Boyce), and Jafar’s son Jay (Booboo Stewart) look on.

Descendants is slated to premiere in 2015 on Disney Channel.

Kristin Chenoweth to play Maleficent in Disney's original movie 'Descendants'

Make way, Angelina Jolie!

Former Wicked witch Kristin Chenoweth has signed on to play Sleeping Beauty baddie Maleficent in Disney’s upcoming original movie Descendants, which follows the teenage children of Disney’s iconic heroes and villains (mainly the villains). The Tony and Emmy winner will butt heads with her onscreen daughter Mal, played by Liv and Maddie star Dove Cameron.

Set to premiere in 2015, Descendants is Disney’s newest experiment in transforming its famous animated characters into live-action figures. The cast of the adventure comedy DCOM (that’s Disney Channel Original Movie) also includes Booboo Stewart as Jay, son of Jafar; Sofia Carson as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen; Cameron Boyce as Carlos, son of Cruelle de Vil; and Mitchell Hope as Ben, the son of Belle and the Beast.
